I think I read in Tatum's book Earl was quoted as adding that the shot to his chest was so bad, he couldn't swallow right for a week or something like that.

It was a massive hit (that was spearing but they didn't call that back then) between two guys who weren't like other humans. Even other NFL caliber humans.

It was a different game back then to say the least. Probably over half of his hits on WRs would be considered targeting today.
On the "immaculate reception", he just detonates Frenchy Fuqua.
