WHITNER'S OFFER TO MCKELVIN UNCOMMON: After Donte revealed to me that he was planning to put Leodis McKelvin up at his house to help him learn the defense faster, I was very impressed. Whitner began to show some leadership characteristics last season. But this really shows some foresight for a young player. I think it also shows how badly he wants to win. He knows that McKelvin's abilities can help the Bills right away and is doing what he can to make it happen as soon as possible. As McKelvin said himself, you don't see that kind of an offer put out there every day.
I asked Donte how McKelvin reacted when he first asked him if he'd be interested in staying with him.
?His reaction was he was thankful. He said, ?Thanks man I appreciate it,?" said Whitner.
I also asked McKelvin if he has a way of paying Whitner back, perhaps by cooking up a good meal one night or something.
?I cook pretty good," said McKelvin. "Enough to hold up my end. But I?m expecting sooner or later to take all the DBs out.?

Sounds like McKelvin knows there are other "expectations" that come with being a top pick rookie.

Cowherd is such a two-faced ass kisser. Yeah, Ohio State fans want Jim Tressel's head. :roll1: Way to take the comments of a few irrational bandwagoners and pin it on the entire fanbase. :shake:

Better defense should mean better Whitner for Bills
Thursday, June 05, 2008 |
Posted by Connor Byrne

Since Buffalo Bills strong safety Donte Whitner debuted in the NFL back in 2006, reviews have been mixed. The 22-year-old (23 in July) has asserted himself as one of the Bills' defensive leaders, and he's taken on the unenviable task of working largely in run support for a 'D' that has been porous during his two-year career, but fans of the team would still like to see Whitner make more high-impact plays that show up on the stat sheet.

His 194 career tackles in 30 regular-season games are nice, in other words, but Bills loyalists are also hoping the 5-foot-11, 208-pounder can create more turnovers in Year 3 of his pro career. During his first two seasons, Whitner -- the eighth overall pick in the '06 draft -- has racked up only two interceptions and one forced fumble.

LEODIS McKELVIN: ?Donte didn?t have to do this, but it shows what kind of guy he is.?

Donte Whitner, right, said it was only natural for him to take Leodis McKelvin under his wing.

Entering his third NFL season, strong safety Donte Whitner has already established himself as one of the Buffalo Bills? most prominent leaders. It?s a role he takes very seriously.

That?s why Whitner is letting rookie cornerback Leodis McKelvin stay at his home in Hamburg this offseason. Whitner?s goal is to shorten McKelvin?s professional learning curve.

?It?s no mystery. We didn?t pick him No. 11 overall in the draft to sit on the bench,? Whitner said. ?We picked him at No. 11 because he was the best corner available, he?s a unique talent and he can definitely help this football team. So it?s my job, the coaching staff?s job and everybody else?s job to help make sure his transition is smooth and make sure he gets on the field as soon as possible in order to help our team.?

Whitner decided to make his home available to McKelvin shortly after the draft. Like McKelvin, Whitner was a first-round pick, so he?s well aware of the expectations being placed on someone drafted that high.

While Whitner was able to handle the spotlight, it?s not that easy for most rookies. It helped that former Bills safety Troy Vincent was around to take Whitner under his wing.

Now Whitner wants to do the same for McKelvin.

?When I came into the NFL two years ago, I didn?t know what to expect,? Whitner said. ?He?s a rookie in a similar situation that I was in. I know what he?s going through, so I want to help him get through the process as quick and as painless as possible.?

No one in the Bills? organization had to ask Whitner to take McKelvin under his wing. But the team isn?t surprised.

?Donte is a special guy,? coach Dick Jauron said. ?When we drafted him we knew he had special skills. What he?s doing with Leodis is an indication of his character and what he believes in. He?s a good teammate and a good leader even though he?s only been in the league a short time.?

As stated by Florio on ProFootballTalk.com:

When Whitner was drafted with the eighth overall pick in 2006, many (us included) called it a reach. Every team should be so lucky as to reach for a guy who will become so quickly a leader, and who’ll influence young players to stay out of trouble.

Way to go Donte!!
