Right, it’s like comparing Jim Brown and Walter Payton. You almost have to do it in tiers for it to make sense. How do you compare Mike Doss to Hopalong?

I always find the best ever argument to be a bit ridiculous. Hard to compare different generations of players.

You know Gomer and under your avatar it says ‘Head Coach’.No idea what you guys are talking about. I don’t need tiers to know that Gomer Jones is the goat center at OSU. 5’8 and 210 lbs of fury.
It's always blown my mind that something like the last 530 HRs Ruth hit were extending his own record. Another sort of guy who was so much better than his peers ... Wayne Gretsky. Mario Lemieux was about as close as you can get, but he wasn't that close.IMO you have to compare a player in their own era and how they did against their peers. Then you can start to have a cross era comparison conversation. (Which is why, say, the things Babe Ruth did vs his peers is so unlike what anyone else has done vs their peers in sports)
That is why I said Downs is just so visibly better than other players on the same field. That stand out element is universal when you watch the great ones play in their day (whatever day it is). They stand out, it's almost like you can't stop watching them once you see them.
Downs has that level if "it" that I don't recall in an OSU secondary since Winfield.
