S Caleb Downs (All B1G, All-American, National Champion)

I’ll do mine now.

Antoine Winfield but bigger.

Always is the right spot, surest tackler on the team just a visibly different player than everyone else.
Yep. The more I think about it this is the correct comparison and I'd compare, at this point in his career, Lathan Ransom to Mike Doss. Kid breaks freaking helmets and running backs left and right. Caleb is just always in the correct place and makes the play every single time he's there. Love this secondary!

Man, that takes me back. I had 4 full teams for electric football and played it for days on end by myself or with my buddies. So many memories.

Caleb Downs might be the smartest football player I've ever seen. Put his mind in his body and he is a complete football player and thats hard to find. I'd say he is a Top 5 pick when he declares for the draft, he's that good.

This is a relief
Same but I think he would have been more of a flight risk if either of MG or Walton left. But Downs is so good that I really don't think scheme matters that much because ballers are going to ball. He could have me as his coach and still dominate. He's still got very good position coaches regardless of the DC change either way.

Ohio State defensive star earns flowers from key College Football Playoff rival at 2025 NFL Combine

The Ohio State Buckeyes continue to be a hot topic at the 2025 NFL Combine, and a good bit of the noise is coming from outside of the program. On Thursday, the best tight ends in the 2025 NFL Draft class hit the podium to answer questions.

Recent foes aren't always willing to be so kind to a team that beat them in the College Football Playoff, but Texas' Gunnar Helm was willing to pull the curtain back on Ohio State. Helm was highly complimentary of the unit as a whole and safeties Caleb Downs and Lathan Ransom.

"First off, Ohio State's one of the best defenses I've ever played. Best players, best scheme, best team. Obviously, having those guys on the back end [Downs and Ransom] help get everybody organized and lined up...What Lathan can do, obviously in the run game, come up and fill, that stuck out to me when we were preparing for them. He wasn't afraid to hit anybody.

It's the same for Caleb Downs. We tried our best to prepare for that but in the end, I think we got a little out schemed and did what we could. But really a heck of a player in the back-end."

Downs and Ransom didn't grade their best against Texas by PFF, but Helm did properly cite their run defense as being a factor. They combined for five run stops and were constantly rotating around to confuse Texas' offense as well as they could.

Downs will enter 2026 as a top NFL Draft prospect, while Ransom is expecting to hear his name called within the first 125 picks or so.

Caleb Downs claims Ohio State national championship run greatest in college football history

"You're right," Downs said when asked if the Buckeyes' postseason was the best. "I would say the story of this team has to be told. The run that we went on, I haven't seen a run like it. It was an honor to be a part of. … Those two losses were both turning points for us during the season. They helped the team grow and get to where we were at the end of the season. Losing to the Team up North is one of the reasons that we actually won it."

"It's kind of over with just because we have to play next year, and we have a new team," Downs said of Ohio State's championship celebrations. "We have more to do. I wouldn't say we're talking about (going back-to-back). Right now, we are really just trying to focus on the process and get better every day. We have the talent to do it. We have a team to do it. We just have to put the work in and show it on the field."

"I'm so thankful for coach Ryan Day allowing me to come into this program and allowing me to have a chance to develop a relationship with new brothers and new teammates," Downs said. "Now, I'm having a chance to be a leader on the team and to make more of an impact than I did last season."
