S/C Coach Mickey Marotti (Official Thread)

Could have had a lot better ink if he had some Gold Pants to work with.

Couldn't help but notice that by the middle of the third quarter it was the Oregon defense that was gassed. The two defensive ends could barely move. For a team that was supposed to love to play uber up-tempo it was clear they weren't ready to withstand being on the field for long drives.

Much the same could be said during the game with Alabama, even though the buckeye defense spent most of the 3rd quarter trying to stave off disaster, they didn't cave. Meanwhile 'bama's D was forced to play their 3s and 4s at critical moments because the 1s and 2s were injured or worn out.

Clearly the better conditioned team won both games and the NC. Hats off to Coach Marotti.

Totally doing this with U13 lacrosse players. We work their asses off in practice and make them drill / game sim while they are tired. It's a huge advantage. Ask any of my players why they are there and the answer is "TEAM." Ask them why they train so hard in practice, the answer is "WIN FOURTH QUARTER." They're 6-0 in league (60 goals for / 14 goals against) and 4-0 in tourneys (46 goals for / 4 goals against). They don't like it, but they like the results.

WHILE TALKING AND UTMOST TRUST MAKE OHIO STATE'S MICKEY MAROTTI URBAN MEYER'S MOST IMPORTANT ADVISOR

Everyone associated with the Ohio State football team has a Coach Mick story. If you don't, you will soon before you leave Columbus.

"We were doing quadri-pads or whatever they’re called, and he tells you to squeeze your butt cheek or whatever. He told me one time I wasn’t doing it hard enough," Buckeye senior defensive tackle Adolphus Washington recalled Thursday. "He said, ‘If you do it hard enough, you’ll blow all the windows off in the building’ or something like that. Everybody in the weight room just died laughing for like five minutes."

Discussing the effort of someone's butt cheeks during a workout is sure to instill some laughter among whoever can hear it, but Mickey Marotti's impact on Urban Meyer's football program is perhaps greater than any other.

"I learned over the years, Coach Marotti is my right-hand man," Meyer said Thursday. "While I'm here, he's with the team. When I'm doing stuff, whatever I have to do, he's with the team. So I really rely on him for the pulse of our team."

Urban Meyer's Secret Weapon

COLUMBUS, Ohio — With a combined 38-3 record in the three seasons since he arrived at Ohio State, Urban Meyer has the Buckeyes sitting atop the college football world. And as his team enters the 2015 season as the first-ever unanimous preseason No. 1 team in the Associated Press Top 25, that's not something that figures to be changing for Ohio State anytime soon.

But while Meyer serves as the face of the Buckeyes program—and to a degree, college football—the three-time national champion head coach credits a large portion of his success to a confidant, friend and right-hand man whom he's known for nearly 30 years.

And while Mickey Marotti is rarely seen or heard from publicly, the stories about him have already become the stuff of legend in Columbus. That's why he was the first call Meyer made when he took the Ohio State job nearly four years ago, as Marotti has become the secret weapon for college football's budding dynasty.

THIS WINTER IS A BIT DIFFERENT FOR MICKEY MAROTTI, BUT OHIO STATE'S STRENGTH COACH ENJOYS IT THAT WAY

67940_h.jpg,qitok=h0Lo-S9J.pagespeed.ce.uLvFsL62o2.jpg

If you want a quick glimpse as to how young Ohio State is going to be for 2016, all you have to do is ask strength coach Mickey Marotti how many players on the team were yet to experience his infamous mat drills prior to this offseason.

“We have 47,” Marotti said Wednesday morning.

That’s quite an alarming number, but it’s not all that surprising when you really think about it and remember what the Buckeyes lost after last season. With nine early departures to the NFL and a large senior class now gone, there was always going to be turnover.

Ohio State has seven early enrollees from its 2016 class that are already on campus. Add those to the 22 who freshmen who are experiencing their first winter with Marotti and that makes 29 scholarship guys. That’s a lot, but again, it’s not unexpected.

Working with such a young group is a different challenge for Marotti, of course, but it’s one he said he actually enjoys.

“I love this kind of group,” Marotti said, before repeating himself for emphasis. “I love it. I think it’s awesome. You see guys, you just see a different mentality from the last bowl practice at the Fiesta Bowl to here, guys grow up all of a sudden.

“There’s no more Ezekiel Elliott, there’s no more Taylor Decker and Jacoby Boren. There’s no more Joey Bosa, Joshua Perry and all of a sudden these new guys come in and you see them grow up without them even doing anything.”
