S Anderson Russell (official thread)

Branden Joe was nice filling in last year, and I suspect if you see us getting real thin you might see quite a few plays run with only Schnittker in the backfield, especially if he can haul off 5 or 6 runs a game for 30 yards like he was showing in the Spring game. Three-wide with a TE and one back works well for the personnel we'll have. Don't expect to see much of Russel myself, but you never know until he arrives and shows his stuff to the coaches. Wouldn't have figured Guilford for many touches either....

No bad, BN319. Good discussion over there, but it's worth discussing over here, too, now that he's no longer a recruit--he's a Buckeye!!

Let's continue the discussion on Russell in his existing thread...just because he's no longer a recruit doesn't mean that the info in that thread is no longer relevent. In fact, most of the info that will answer current and furture questions about him is already there. It's always better to keep threads to a minimum.

His interviews indicate that he is coming as a safety. There just doesn't seem to be room for him there. With his speed and size, I say running back. I don't think he beats out Wells for the the third back. I hope the first three stay healthy so he can redshirt. In my opinion, I can't see them wasting a redshirt on this kid just to play special teams. Of course, I also thought that about Sirjo Welch and look what happened. Who knows.

From the Football Press Luncheon on 9/20/05....Directly from Coach Tressel....

We had some scout team guys that have continued to do a great job. Anderson Russell's name comes up again, scout special teams player of the week. He's going to be a heck of a football player because he goes a hundred percent all the time and he doesn't care if it's practice or scrimmage or weight room or classroom or whatever. Anderson Russell's going to be good and he was recognized again by his coaching staff.

There's been talk that Russell is one of the best safeties on the team.
It will be interesting to see if he can work himself up to the first team.
I think he'll play, and play a lot this coming year.

I am curious where this 'talk' has come from...

one of the best? Is that for 06 or in 05 as well?
I can't quote other sites, but our coaches, including Tressel, himself have said he's "stood out". On scout team and practice.
I look for ONeal and Mitchell to start, but Russell to see playing time and take Mitchell's place, eventually.
I'm not sold on Mitchell.
And throw Patterson in the mix, also.

k... I've heard reports of him standing out in practice, but to be one of the best safeties requires being on par or above o'neal, mitchell, patterson, and salley/whitner if the statement was made last year. Should be interesting to keep an eye on him this spring. Hopefully your source is spot on.

I could be wrong, but Taosman, are you getting your info from Alum82 on the BN free board? He's a very reliable poster, who is part of the staff somehow. He has said that Anderson is our best safety, and he will be starting this year. He also feels that if the light clicks on for O'Neal, then he will get the other safety spot, with Mitchell at the nickel.

Brandon Mitchell's senior status, his academic excellence (he graduated in 3 years and is now in graduate school), and his off-the-field leadership (he was on the search committee that selected Gene Smith as AD) will all weigh heavily with Jim Tressel. That said, we need at least two more safeties to step up, and I have been rooting for Anderson Russell all along. Look for Mitchell to be the spiritual leader of the group, but look for JamO and Anderson Russell to be the other major contributors. Anyone else who beats those two out (eg, Devon Lyons, Sirjo Welch) is going to have to be awfully good. We don't rebuild, we re-load.
