S Anderson Russell (official thread)

New info, very interesting!

There's some interesting new info over on BNs about Anderson Russel! It appears that he'll get a look at RB and CB when he comes in. Also he was offered a schollie at the OSU camp after Mel Tucker saw how gifted he was. Check it out! Good read!

Russell Places In Georgia State Track Meet
By Steve Helwagen Managing Editor
Date: May 15, 2005

Ohio State signee Anderson Russell of Atlanta Marist High School participated in the Georgia state track meet this past week. Click this free link for details on how Russell fared in the state meet as well as his comments on his plans for the summer ahead.

Ohio State football signee Anderson Russell of Atlanta Marist participated in the Georgia state track and field meet this week in Jefferson, Ga.

Russell participated in four events in the Class AAAA meet – the long jump, 4x100 relay and the 100- and 200-meter dashes. He placed second in the 200 in 22.00, just 0.17 of a second behind the race winner. He was also fourth in the 100-meter dash in 10.98 seconds.

Russell told Bucknuts.com earlier this week he will graduate next Saturday. His final academic marks will likely be a 3.0 GPA and an 1130 on the SAT.

“I am looking forward to graduation,” Russell said. “There is a chance I’m going to run in the Nike national track meet June 5 in Raleigh, N.C.”

Russell said he plans to stay in the Atlanta area this summer and work out at Competitive Edge Sports.

“I will be working out with Chip Smith,” Russell said. “He has been a trainer for a lot of college and pro athletes.

“Then, I’ll come up for my orientation July 21. I’ll will probably stay in Columbus after that and work out with the team.”

It has been speculated that the 6-0, 205-pound Russell, who starred at running back and defensive back for Marist, could play on either side of the ball at Ohio State.

“I have talked with (secondary coach Paul) Haynes,” Russell said. “He came down here and I met him. He would be my defensive backs coach if I end up playing defense. I have been in contact with him.”

Very nice numbers for the kid's first season of track since quitting baseball. He definately has some very good speed. To be under 11 seconds and 22 seconds in his first season means he has great speed because he probably doesn't have a whole lot of technique yet.

how many stars did this kid have as a recruit? 2? 3? i think Russel will end up on the offensive side, but that remains to be seen...

is anyone else as impressed as i am with Tressel's ability to land unheralded recruits who turn out to be superstars, a la A.J. Hawk? Sirjo Welch is the next in line, and Anderson Russell will surely follow... this kid has all the tools...

No bad, BN319. Good discussion over there, but it's worth discussing over here, too, now that he's no longer a recruit--he's a Buckeye!! I'm excited about this kid--hoping he's the "sleeper" or "steal" of the recruiting class as others speculate.

He'll get his opportunities at RB. He's effectively the fourth scholarship back on the roster, so he'll get reps in practice. Whether he gets playing time probably depends as much on how the others perform. If the other RBs are looking good, he may go to defense. But we know the defense is looking good and deep, so keeping him on offense also makes sense.

On the other question, will he redshirt? I think he will make an immediate impact on special teams. Seems to have the makings of an eventual ideal gunner.
