S Anderson Russell (official thread)

His tackling seems to be pretty good to me (again, I do not claim to be an expert). The third CB comment is what I was wondering about also. I guess I was thinking that with Hines playing the Star and Amos and Chekwa manning the corners, the 3rd CB would not need to be used that often during the USC game. Little unrealistic thinking that Amos and Chekwa could play the whole game without coming out for a few plays during the game, but we don't have to play the 3rd CB very often since we use the Star position when we are in the Nickel.

Is my thinking flawed in regards to the 3rd CB?

In my opinion, no. Because, I think we'll all agree that Anderson is a liability in pass coverage. He's proven that. I love the kid, but he can't cover my grandma.

Not everything that happened with Russell was his fault. I agree that he should never play corner because his one on one abilities aren't there. But going against USC, Ohio State shouldn't have to put him in that position because they won't play a cover 1 all game. If we have the guys playing man up on the USC receivers that have corner abilities (Chek/Amos/Torrence/Hines) (and that is if they go 4 wide, which most likely won't happen) and play a cover 2, A.R. will be an assistant of sorts and not have the full responsibility of direct cover. Also if he plays more of a FS role he will have more time to react to a receiver coming thru a zone. I personally think we need Hines near the line for pressure and run support reasons in the nickel. But outside of that I can see reasons to switch personel. On the other hand, most don't see what goes on in practice and behind the scenes. I don't believe Tressel will move things around seeing that Russell is a senior and Hines isn't. Not before the game at least. Now if He gets burnt in the new scheme then maybe we see some switch ups but, I may be the only one here, I have confidence that used in the correct way Russell isn't a liability, like he was used against Navy. I feel he is an asset and he will prove that on Sat.

...just an addition...
It helps to understand that cover corners are taught to force slot recievers into a defenses teeth to where help is(play them on the outside edge). He failed to do so on the shorter td pass but fixed it and did so on the deep pass. No one in the stadium expected the post including Kurt Coleman and he wasn't in his safety position. Kurt played great but Anderson was expecting and relying on his help on that play.

Edit....I rewatched the play like 20 times now... it was a zone... Anderson did expect Kurt to be there.... Kurt covered for bad zone play to his left with a TE... hence the open middle and td pass

Ohio State football: Hines in, Russell out as starting safety
by Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
Tuesday September 08, 2009

The change that many Ohio State observers thought was coming has been made, it appears.

Jermale Hines worked with the first-team defense at safety today, while former starting fee safety Anderson Russell worked with the second team. Previously, Russell was in his third year as a starter, with Hines a backup safety and the No. 1 nickelback at the "star" position.

But Russell was in coverage for both Navy passing touchdowns on Saturday, and Hines is a player that coaches have been saying needs to be on the field a lot.

To accommodate their skills, it looks like Kurt Coleman will move from strong safety to free safety and have slightly more coverage responsibilities, and Hines will take over at strong safety, where he can come up more often and help in the run game.

Don't be surprised if the Buckeyes also use three cornerbacks more often in passing situations on Saturday against USC.

Russell has played the "star" position before and is almost certain to remain on the field in nickel situations against spread teams, as Hines has been in the past. But after another game in which Russell had some issues in coverage, and Hines looked like a potential game-changer, this move comes as no surprise.

Wow, stinks for Russell, but if it makes the team better which I think it will, than I'm all for it. Hopefully we see Hines as the Doss/Allen/Whitner SS that we've had in the past. We'll see. Nice to see the staff try to address an issue though.

Hopefully Russell doesn't get discouraged and continues to work hard... he will have a chance to prove himself again and I'm confident he will deliver.

Russell has battled through injuries without complaint...he'll suck it up and give his all for the team dispite the "demotion".

If Rolle hadn't been in position for the 'pick-2', Russell probably would have had the pick on that play; but not been able to run it back all the way, due to being a couple of yards deep in the end zone.

Agreed 100%. Even though I was calling for it, I still hate to see it happen to a guy that gives it his all. I have no doubt he will be big on special teams and still contribute on defense. This must be tough on the coaches though, this is never an easy choice to make.
