Ryan Mundy..Transferring to WVU?

Just saw this. It's very strange to be sure. But, apparently the NCAA gave him another year(injury) and he's doing grad work at WVU and can play football immediately.

Which part was strange? The play immediately part?

I think he's been talking about transferring for awhile, so perhaps he got in under the graduate transfer rule (which lasted a year). I believe if you put in your transfer early enough this offseason, you got to use the old rule.

Ex-Michigan safety cleared to play for WVU

By Mitch Vingle
Sports Editor West Virginia University?s beleaguered secondary received a significant boost Friday as Ryan Mundy, a former blue-chip recruit who started 18 games at the University of Michigan, received clearance from the NCAA to play football for the Mountaineers.
Mundy will be in Morgantown Monday and has one season of eligibility.
A former star for Woodland Hills High School in Western Pennsylvania, Mundy began his career at UM in 2003 by playing on special teams and as a reserve free safety as a true freshman. As a sophomore he started all 12 games at free safety, had 51 tackles, intercepted a pass against Notre Dame, had a career-high seven tackles against Ohio State and played in the Rose Bowl against Texas.

Firstly, to transfer from scUM after being there so long is strange.
Sometimes they don't welcome certain kids back for a 5th season. I'm not sure if that was the case here, but he's better off at WVU in terms of PT.
Secondly, I've never heard of this actually happening like this.
The NCAA added a grad school transfer option, I'm assuming to get 1 free year of a head start on grad school.

Last offseason a lot of kids transferred, without a 1 yr penalty, elsewhere for grad school. Florida cured their CB depth issue this way, en route to an NC. The NCAA got rid of the rule, b/c it had too many flaws.

Scum's secondary has been a horror show for some time now. To lose this kid, even if he's not 100%, is strange.
He's had a hand in the horror. He also was the 5th safety on the depth chart against USC.

Fixing that weakness is more likely through youngsters like Steve Brown, Mike Williams, etc.

Er, this was been known about for a long time, and isn't even the slightest bit disruptive. Mundy started the horror show that was 2004, prompting MGoBlog to coin the phrase, "Yards After Mundy."
So, if any given Mundy shows strong for the 'Eers can we finally conclude that the Big East truly does occupy last place in the BCS conferences?

Yes UM in the vein that it is disruptive when you stop training someone after years of work and have to start training someone new before you expected it.
Well, he was 5th on the safety depth chart during the bowl game, so his role was already largely diminished. He has also been riddled with injuries in past years, IIRC. So I'm not sure this is a very large distraction.

Multiple dope incidents, beating up random students, 2 players off team, #2 WR on his last strike, Henne's (only viable) heir wanting to transfer (before the parents talk him out of it)... those things were probably more distracting.
