Rulon Gardner survives small plane crash

SALT LAKE CITY - Olympic wrestling champion Rulon Gardner and two Utah men were rescued by a Lake Powell fisherman Sunday after surviving a small plane crash near Good Hope Bay the day before.
Gardner was a passenger in the Cirrus SR 22 along with pilot Randy Brooks and his brother, Leslie Brooks, according to a news release from Becki Bronson, public information officer for Garfield County. The plane was flying low when it struck the water.
"The plane went from 150 mph to none in about 2 seconds," Gardner told CNN early Monday morning.

Scrambling out of a downed, waterlogged airplane, swimming to shore through an icy cold lake, spending the night exposed in the freezing, desert chill, then walking away with little more than bumps and bruises. Harrowing close calls are becoming a habit for Rulon Gardner, Olympic wrestling champion-turned-escape artist.
He has lost a toe to frostbite; been involved in a serious motorcycle accident; and when a child, he impaled himself with an arrow.
Gardner's weekend brush with death was the third since he unbelievably captured the gold at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. It happened when a small airplane he was riding in crashed into the aptly named Good Hope Bay, near the Arizona-Utah border.

When Gardner beat Karelin to win the Olympic Gold, he basically defeated who was recognized as the toughest man on the planet. Rulon seems destined to keep this "title" his own for a long time.
