.a lot of those houses have the old "knob and tube" wiring.
This wiring is actually not considered to be as "un-safe" as you would expect. It does take a a lot of flak mainly because of its appearance but is actually pretty safe. The newer "Romex" I believe it's called can actually be more dangerous if there is a manfacture defect because of the wires being so close together.
In fact "two Knob" wiring is actually still allowed under city code in some cities even though people choose to use "Romex" for obvious reasons
The tube wiring was so dried and cracked that I'm surprised there wasn't any arching (sp?).
The wires weren't seperated by anything else other than the tubes. I thought that they were always seperated by about 3"-4" of space.
These ones certainly weren't.
Here's a pic of the electric box in a house that I looked at last week. I was ready to put in an offer until I had my dad look at the house and tell me everything that needed work. If not for the 5.5 foot basement I probably still would have put in an offer.
