.a lot of those houses have the old "knob and tube" wiring.

This wiring is actually not considered to be as "un-safe" as you would expect. It does take a a lot of flak mainly because of its appearance but is actually pretty safe. The newer "Romex" I believe it's called can actually be more dangerous if there is a manfacture defect because of the wires being so close together.

In fact "two Knob" wiring is actually still allowed under city code in some cities even though people choose to use "Romex" for obvious reasons

If you think the knob and tube is safe, you should have sen what I tore out of my house!

I can't believe the place was still standing. Knob and tube can be OK but not in a house as old as these.

The tube wiring was so dried and cracked that I'm surprised there wasn't any arching (sp?).

Wait till Iam finds out how much it's going to cost to have the alarm system re-wired. We had tenants cut the wires on a security system we had installed in a house we rented. Cutting the wires freaked out other parts of the system and it took the installation guy half a day to restore the system to full function. Ran us close to $400 as I recall.

Here's a pic of the electric box in a house that I looked at last week. I was ready to put in an offer until I had my dad look at the house and tell me everything that needed work. If not for the 5.5 foot basement I probably still would have put in an offer.

looks like a house I rented in Defiance a number of years ago. My wife and I used to sing "Ode to My House" to the tune of Adam Sandlers song "Ode to My Car". That was just many of the problems with that pile.

That's almost exactly what my electrical box looked like.

My father in law ripped the whole thing out a put in a new box and wiring.

The elec. box. looked like an octopus with tentacles coming off of it.
