Game Thread Rose Bowl, #8 tOSU vs #1 Oregon, Jan 1, 5:00 ET on ESPN

I rewatched the first half of the Oregon game. Three pre-snap penalties. A bizarre Judkins "fumble" and the kickoff that bounced off of an Ohio State player on the kickoff from the 50 following a 15 yard penalty and the Buckeyes still scored 21 points in the first half. Clean all of that up and this game isn't close.

Yeah, that was the cleanest game Oregon has played. They only had 3 penalties for 25 yards vs our 8/70. 0 turnovers for them as well....and that was a stretch of 5 games where Gabriel threw at least a pick in every game except ours. That was the best and cleanest game Oregon has played all year. We can attack them much like we did Tennessee and I'm confident we can have a two-score victory.

I agree. If we just don’t turn the ball over I think we win. If we play a clean game, with no turnovers, and if Oregon has a few mistakes I can see a world where Oregon is going for it in the 3rd quarter because their season is seriously on the brink (down 2+ scores).

Bottom line is if the defense doesn’t get beat over the top I like our chances regardless. Make them earn it.

There has been a lot of talk about what we need to do better this time to win (not give up big plays to their WRs, clean up penalties and turnovers, better run success rate, more pressure on Gabriel). Here are my thoughts on what we need to replicate in the rematch. In other words, this is what I imaging Duck fans are saying that they need to do better in Pasadena.

-Just like last week, we need to feed EE and Smith. They had a monster game in week 7 - combining for 19/193/2
-Keep Howard upright with his eyes downfield. Similar to us, their defense did not generate much pressure, with their only sack coming on the last drive. Without going back, I assume that us being in must-score mode and not being able to give Zen help played a role in that sack.
-Win time of possession. We were very efficient with a high net success rate on offense. Plus, going 2 for 2 on 4th down helped our our lackluster 3rd down conversion rate of 33% (4 for 12) end up being more like 50% (6 of the 12 times we got to third down, the drive continued).
-Win special teams. (I really hope that we do all of the above and it doesn't come down to this one). We all know that special teams is not our strength, but Fielding was perfect while their kickers were not, missing a FG and - despite it obviously working out in their favor - shanking a kickoff.

So this is the first Rose Bowl between conference opponents.

It‘s also only the 5th time a team gets to play a bowl game against a team from the same conference that beat them earlier that same season.

The previous examples:

1959’s Sugar Bowl (1/1/1960): LSU won the regular season, Ole Miss won the Bowl game.

1978‘s Orange Bowl (1/1/1979): Nebraska won the regular season, Oklahoma won the Bowl game.

2011 BCS Title (1/9/2012): LSU won at Bama in the regular season, Bama won the Title game in New Orleans.

2021 CFP Title (1/10/2022): Bama won the CCG matchup in Atlanta, Georgia won the Title game in Indianapolis.

Anybody else hoping that trend continues?
