Rivalries and Conferences (Split from LSU v. OSU Offensive Personnel Thread)

Tigertracker;1036622; said:
Consider this about the teams he claims are not relevent. If LSU had not intercepted that pass late in the Tenn. game there is a very strong possibility that Georgia would be the team you would be playing for the NC. Auburn went undeafeated a couple of years ago and normally would have been in the NC game. At the begining of each season there are 5 or 6 SEC teams that have a realistic chance at winning the conference, in the last 10 years there have been 5 different teams do so. I can't think of another conference that has that much balance. So to call any one of these teams irrelevent is very wrong in my opinion.

Tigertracker;1036870; said:
That's exactly how it works, use the same criteria for both conferences, anything else is comparing apples to oranges.

Tigertracker;1036938; said:
That is exactly what I said, they are apples and oranges. If you are going to count all of the co-champs then you would have to use the same criteria and go back and see how many co-champs the SEC would have had using the same rules. I have no intention of doing that, but be my guest if you wish.
I am out of here, I have better things to do than deal with all of this paranoia, Persecution complexes and SEC envy.

I'll let you in on a well kept secret. The BXII also has a conference championship game. That would be apples to apples or, if you prefer, oranges to oranges. You're still wrong.

I wonder what Ol' Tiger would have to say about the Big XII.

2007 - Oklahoma
2006 - Oklahoma
2005 - Texas
2004 - Oklahoma
2003 - Kansas State
2002 - Oklahoma
2001 - Colorado
2000 - Oklahoma
1999 - Nebraska
1998 - Texas A&M

I've never seen such balance. What is that... 6 teams in 10 years?

Even with SEC who also has 6 (he said 5 or 6, it's 6, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee since 1998)

Even if you just say that Ohio State or TSUN were the "real" champions in the "co" years, that would still leave four teams winning the conference during the time frame.

Two fewer teams in a one school smaller conference. Not quite the massive disparity implied.

Personally money is on at least one of Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue or Penn State winning out even with a conf-champ during one of those years (with my money being on NW in 2000, Iowa in 04 or Penn State in 05).

Except, that's incorrect.
2005 Ohio State and Penn State tied - PSU gets title as they won H2H
2004 Michigan and Iowa tied - Michigan H2H
2002 Ohio State and Iowa tied - Ohio State gets title as better overall record
2000 Michigan Purdue and Northwestern tied. Purdue won the Rose Bowl berth thru whatever tie break system
1998 Ohio State Michigan Wisconsin - doesn't matter because each also has it's own title, but I think it was Wiscy who went to the Rose, OSU to the Sugar

Thus, we have since 1998 the following conference winners,
1998 - Wisconsin
1999 - Wisconsin
2000 - Purdue
2001 - Illinois
2002 - Ohio State
2003 - Michigan
2004 - Michigan
2005 - Penn State
2006 - Ohio State
2007 - Ohio State

6 Teams in 10 years. Just like the SEC.

Tiger, I'll take your silence as concession.

Incidentally, when talking about conference parity... isn't a CoChampionship direct evidence of that? How is it the Big Ten's fault that the SEC decided to have a money driven championship game? Big Ten is making money without one, so....

Sheesh, talk about a stupid argument. I don't expect SEC people to get, care about, hell or even watch the tOSU/UM game. But I also don't expect them to come belittle it, I honestly don't give a flying moose-shit what you think about our rivalry, or our conference, hell, really, or even our team or myself. Honestly, at this point, I was hoping for more intelligent football discussion, but instead it's turned into this side-ways pissing contest that's just got friggin' annoying. Does anyone here ACTUALLY think they are going to change any opinions from the other side?

Yes, we have the best band, fans, most tradition and history as well as the greatest rivalry ever to hit any sport, Jesus himself reincarnates on the day of the Game when it's in Columbus just to root for the Bucks! And you know what? that's how we feel about all of this, does that mean that's how you need to feel? No, but does that mean you should argue? No, because it's how we feel, it's not how we expect you to feel but this stupidity of "No one cares about your rivalry anymore" has gotten to the point where it's almost trash talking.

I thought this thread was discussing LSU and OSU offensive players? Not who's conference has better opponents, who has the best rivalry or any of that bullshit. Just get-fucking-over it, we're not going to say "you're right, Michigan and Ohio State has no meaning" because we live and die by the outcome of that game and bleed when it it happens.

So just stop.
Can a brother get a GPA?

I'm with those who believe that rivalries are a regional thing. I live in Louisiana and the only reason i know OSU-Michigan is a huge rivalry is because ESPN tells me so, and that i should watch it. Granted, I am only 29 and probably haven't been around for all the illustrious history taken place in college football, but this is still my set of eyes i see things with, and i am saying things as i see them. I generally could care less who wins the OSU-Michigan game, along with the rest of this state, and the south. Don't get me wrong, i am sure there are a few transplanted northernors who do, but i am going on generalities here. Around here, I hate Auburn. That is a big rivalry for us, especially in the last ten years. Huge, but ESPN has decided it is just another game, so y'all really don't hear about it, but that is the team i want to beat most every year. Alabama is gaining rather quickly howver; we're getting ready to play in the ncg and they are still trashtalking. lol

edit--i am not dissing y'alls rivalry, just trying to make my point that rivalries are a regional thing. I realize it is huge for y'all. I reread my post and wondered if i was coming off a little to rough. lol

I challenge anyone who thinks the tOSU / scUM rivalry isn't the best rivalry in sports to watch "The Rivalry" made by HBO. Its available for download on most torrent sites. If anyone can trash talk The Game after watching that, they obviously are hopeless. In one hour you get a small tidbit of what the rivalry is all about, and thats all you should need to be convinced.

There are at least five posts in this thread that make my eyes roll back when I read them. I am now going to drill a hole in my head and begin scooping out my frontal lobe with a plastic spoon.

I don't think anybody here is arguing the validity of LSU's rivalry games. Every team has them, but to say LSU-Auburn is on the same level as THE GAME is simply homerism. LSU-Auburn is never mentioned in polls amongst the greatest rivalry in all of sports. It did not have its own HBO special. Also, saying it hasn't meant much in the past 5 years may be one of the most ludicrous statements ever posted on this site...and that's saying something. Last year was one of the most watched CFB games EVER and meant a spot in the BCSCG, regardless of eventual outcome. Hey, guess what, turns out it did this year too! My God, everybody appreciates an opposing fan's POV, but for God's sake, do some friggin' research before you spout off.

Okay, back to drilling and scooping.:2004:

I will give you that but believe me, OSU/UM is not that great of a game anymore...

Hense why the 2006 game had its own countdown on ESPN and covered on one of America's largest networks. - I havent seen one SEC game this year (including the CG) garner that much attention yet. That includes the LSU-Florida game.

This years game, while not as big; still had a production from HBO, and about half a dozen articles on 3 major sports sites about the rivalry. - still havent seen anything close to that scale coming from down south.

edit: to be objective though, the Auburn-Bama game is nuts; those people are insane, I have no doubt.
