Stefanie Spielman

Now, the commitment to curing cancer is expressed not by Stefanie Spielman but by her two older children.

To honor their mother, 16-year-old Maddie and 13-year-old Noah took her place onstage yesterday during what had been her favorite charitable event - Stefanie's Champions.

The children, like their two younger sisters, had always attended the annual luncheon.

Yet they sought a greater role in the 2010 ceremony, the first since their mother's death in November.

With their father introducing the five honorees, all devoted caregivers of cancer patients, Maddie and Noah greeted them with awards, smiles and hugs.

"Obviously it's difficult," Chris Spielman said afterward, "but they have their mother's strength."

Maddie aspires to emulate Stefanie, saying she hopes "to do everything in my power to make the world cancer-free."

In difficult times, she thinks of her mother's final message to the family: to use her death not as an excuse but as motivation.

"There's no reason for us to be sad," Maddie said after the event. "It would be selfish of us to want her back when she's in such a special place."

Scarlet, Gray & Pink: A Walk for Stefanie Spielman

A Walk For Stefanie Spielman Fyler

The Ohio Union at The Ohio State University invites the public to join OSU students Saturday, April 24 for a one-mile walk on campus to celebrate the life of Stefanie Spielman and continue to fight breast cancer.

Registration and check-in for the walk will begin at 8:00am on the South Oval. The opening program with special guests and the Walk for Stefanie will follow at 9:00am. After the walk, which will circle the central campus area, a resource fair, refreshments, and entertainment will be available on the West Plaza of the Ohio Union.

Ohio State alumna Stefanie Spielman and her husband, former OSU football player Chris Spielman, have helped raise more than $6.5 million to support breast cancer patients and research and participated in countless events raising awareness of breast cancer to all audiences, including Ohio State students.

In November 2009, Stefanie passed away after a decade-long battle with breast cancer, leaving us with some final thoughts: Continue to Fight.
Register for the walk and continue to fight at pink.osu.edu. All proceeds will go toward the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

Scarlet, Gray, & Pink: A Walk for Stefanie Spielman precedes the OSU Men's Lacrosse and Spring Football Game at the Ohio Stadium, which will also have a "Scarlet. Gray & Pink" theme to benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

For more information on Scarlet, Gray, and Pink: A Walk for Stefanie Spielman, contact Katie Krajny at [email protected] or 614-688-4419.

I dont know if it is online yet, but the tribute to Stepanie was a class act during halftime yesterday. I'm not sure how Chris held it together.

He held up admirably. When they played Carmen Ohio in her honor, I strained to hold it together myself. He was standing there on the 50, surrounded by the band who were playing in his wife's honor, and his kids were there with him singing the alma mater.

Truly a great moment. Fortunately, Josh was able to get high enough to shoot over the band in time to get this shot of it:

OSU breast cancer center named for Stefanie Spielman

COLUMBUS - Ohio State University officially named its breast cancer center Monday after the late Stefanie Spielman, a Stark County native and wife of former OSU football great Chris Spielman.

Chris Spielman, who starred at Massillon Washington High School before joining the Buckeyes, was on hand for the ceremony, as OSU President E. Gordon Gee announced the naming of The Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center.

The former Stefanie Belcher, a graduate of Jackson High School, died in November 2009 of breast cancer.

According to the university, the breast center is the only one of its kind in the Midwest to offer the full continuum of breast cancer care, from prevention and screening through detection, diagnosis and treatment.

"First and foremost, Stefanie made a difference in the lives of countless patients and their families in the fight against cancer," Gee said. "She touched those struggling with their diagnosis and treatments, helping to make their worlds more comfortable, more optimistic and more affirmative. She possessed an uncommon combination of bravery, grace and compassion that continues to resonate through her remarkable legacy."

Stefanie Spielman graduated from OSU in 1989 with a journalism degree. During a self-examination at age 30, she discovered a lump that was diagnosed as cancer by doctors at Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center ? James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

The Spielmans set out to raise money for breast cancer research at The James. In the first year, they raised more than $1 million for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Since her diagnosis, the Stefanie Spielman Funds have raised more than $9.1 million.
