COLLEGE NEWSWATCH

Daniels up for award:
Ohio State quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Joe Daniels has been named one of the five finalists for the Broyles Award, given each year to the top assistant coach in college football. The winner be will be announced on Jan. 16.
The other nominees are Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, Arkansas defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, Louisville offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables.
Daniels is in his 37th year of coaching and sixth with the Buckeyes. He suffered a heart attack in June and was later diagnosed with cancer near one of his kidneys. Coach Jim Tressel expected Daniels would have to scale back his duties, but while continuing his treatment, Daniels missed time only following the death of his mother. Daniels has worked as the personal tutor to OSU quarterback Smith, who emerged as the Heisman Trophy frontrunner during the Buckeyes' 12-0 season.

Joe Daniels, quarterbacks coach

On Todd Boeckman, sophomore quarterback

"He's further along than we thought. We're very happy with him as far as his development. One of the things I'm very happy with is the way his mind is progressing. He's really starting to understand things and anticipate things. His understanding of the offense is further along than I anticipated."

On Boeckman calling audibles at the line of scrimmage

"He's done a really fine job of it. I don't know off hand, but I think he has only missed a couple. His mental aspect is really improving and has surprised me a little bit. Like I said, he's further along than we thought he would be."

On Boeckman reading coverages

"That was one of his choices (Brian Robiskie, on his touchdown catch in the second quarter at Minnesota). He does a nice job of reading and understanding coverages. He's still not there, but he will be."

Recruiting inroads reopened
Daniels helps Ohio State's resurgence in Pennsylvania

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Ohio State has a secret weapon when it comes to recruiting western Pennsylvania, quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels.
A native of Bethel Park, just south of Pittsburgh, Daniels has some serious street cred. He was Dan Marino's position coach at the University of Pittsburgh, after all.
But Daniels' true value to the Buckeyes is he knows that before you can recruit western Pennsylvania players, you have to be able to find them.
Pittsburgh is a city built on three rivers, with dozens of bridges and a tangle of roads that spread out like a spider web through the surrounding hills and suburbs.

Get well, Joe

Don't know if you caught Tim May's short story on the health of quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels, but Joe is recovering from surgery. Details are vague, but it's likely that he had a kidney removed. He's been battling kidney cancer for nearly two years now.
First things first, Joe is one of the truly great guys I've had the pleasure to work with. Smart, funny, candid (reporters love that!) and genuine. He has a wonderful family, wife Kathy, son Matt -- an OSU walk-on _ and daughter Kaitlin, a Buckeye cheerleader.
So, speedy recovery, Joe.

Dispatch: Cancer recovery will limit Daniels

Cancer recovery will limit Daniels

Sunday, March 23, 2008 3:29 AM

Having undergone surgery to remove a cancerous kidney Feb. 28, Ohio State quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels said he plans to be around some for spring drills but not full time from the start on Thursday.

"I am coming along pretty well," Daniels said. "Maybe early on I won't be there for the whole time. But if I keep getting better, which I anticipate, I think it will work out well.
