Fair enough. It was also a very specific type of serious character that is strongly rooted in an area a few blocks from where Affleck grew up. It's the type of character that is intimately connected with his childhood.

The problem is that while Affleck is good in roles that cover a pretty narrow focus, he has also been terrible when he tries to step outside that comfort zone. His portryal of Tony Mendez was tremendously genericized to keep it within his abilities.

When has Affleck ever shown that he can disappear into a role (other than when portraying Bostonians)?

Jon Hamm would have been an infinitely more interesting choice.

There's a "serious character" that has a gun and yells- not hard to play. Then a physically/mentally imposing and or serious character that has depth beyond shouting and shooting.

Example - Ledgers joker and Hardy's Bane. Hardy was menacing with his eye movements. Ledger's vocal delivery made you think he might have lost his mind.

Bale, in his own right is a terrific actor. You see the end credits after 'The Fighter'? He did owned the role of an addict where I thought he was the original guy.

Affleck has yet to have that type of impact from any role in any film IMHO.
