LA Daily News - Hawaii's Jones shows interest in UCLA job; Dorrell a candidate for Duke football job

A lot of smoke out there regarding JJ approaching the Bruins. Jones contract at UH is up, Hawaii's A.D. is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and there have been multiple sources out there discussing this. Some local businessmen/alumni types are supposedly raising outside money to help keep Jones at UH, but will it be enough? FWIW, I have also heard Norm Chow's name being thrown around as a possible candidate at UCLA. Might be something to keep an eye on.
Norm Chow has been to and failed to grab the ring in several head coaching interviews. Strike him from the list.

As for June Jones - man, that could be a huge mistake by UCLA to invite him onto the LA campus.

The upsides -
Transfers - do you doubt that he would likely bring (by transfer) one or more O-line players and his next Stepford QB.
Sass - that wide-open Offense.

The downside?

Players you want but few else do - Remember the trail that took Brennan to Hawaii, do they really want someone who would out do Rodriguez in overlooking indiscretions when recruiting players?

Age - Not overly old at 54, but he is no spring chicken either.

That wide open Offense - does he really have the players on UCLA's roster to make it work, can he make it work even in the PAC-10 anyway?

Its a Ploy - He may be using this to simply leverage a better situation in Hawaii.

His lack of interview prowress aside, is there anyone out there that could bring such instant credability to UCLA in regards to competeing with USC?

Holy shit would that stoke the fires. If I'm UCLA Chow would have to tell me he spent time in an Al Quida training camp for me to pass him up.

Also iirc the top recruit in the nation for '09 is a hot shot QB from the area that is currently in love with USC and not giving UCLA a sniff. If anyone could change that around it might be Chow.

Regardless, imo UCLA moreso than anyone else needs to make a splash with their hire. They must be seen as a legit rival to USC again and soon.

Rick wins period. All elite programs have some dirt.
star_45.gif

I'm so disgusted by all these Bruin fans who keep bringing up Rick's past and how he killed 2 programs. Look at his overall record. Dude has a sick record and winning percentage. Better than any coach out there that are available. He wins period. He won that decision in court with the NCAA and got 4.5 mill back. He did have his recruiting violations at CU but so what. All the big time programs have had problems including SUC. I don't care as long as you win. We have such a soft mentality that its disgusting. If you want a clean program then fine, but don't expect to win and compete at an elite level because it ain't happening. Go Bruins. Beat BYU.

I thought the Ruins would at least wait until they were committed to Skippy before publicly abandoning their "UCLA does things the right way" talking points. :slappy:

So, does Bellotti want the job, or does he just want to scare Phil Knight into coughing up some more cash?

Bellotti, UCLA talk about head coaching job

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? Oregon football coach Mike Bellotti has discussed UCLA's open head coaching position with Bruins officials, a university spokesman said.

"He's acknowledging that they have spoken with him," assistant athletic director for media services Dave Williford told the Eugene Register-Guard on Thursday night.

Southern California newspapers first reported on their websites that UCLA administrators had met with Bellotti. The Los Angeles Daily News said Bellotti had been contacted by the Bruins earlier in their search but had balked.

Bellotti is in his 13th season as Oregon's coach with a record of 105-52.

So, on talk radio I heard "UCLA just needs to go and offer Bob Stoops or Mack Brown a ton of money and get one of those two guys over here." Because, well ya know they can't actually be happy at their programs, and I mean, everyone would have to be jumping at the chance to compete with Pete Carroll on recruits as well as annually on the field :roll1:
