Rick Neuheisel named new UCLA head coach

Watson, Crick & A Twist
Becoming the first Black Head Coach ever fired at UCLA, Karl Dorrell who led the Bruins to a 6-6 record is out. (ESPN)

UCLA announced Monday that it has fired football coach Karl Dorrell.

"Karl has represented this program with dignity and class. He is a true Bruin and I respect what he has accomplished in his five years as our head coach, particularly off the field," UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said. "But, at the end of the day, the focus has to be on results and I felt that a change was in the best interest for the future of our program."

Dorrell's buyout will pay him just over $2 million.

While it is clear that 6-6 is 0.500, I really think UCLA has to ask what it really takes to win when 'SC is your neighbor.

Prioritization - that is the key.

Incriminating pictures of Pete Carroll in compromising positions is my first recommendation for righting their ship. After that piece of dirty business is out of the way, then you look for the best head coach available.

It's Ty's fault...

Who's next? I agree that this is not suprising. This is a tough place to coach right now. With SC dominating the recruiting landscape and UCLA still having high expectations (unreasonable) they will probably have to offer big bucks for a name coach or roll the dice with another coordinator/unknown type.

If only they could lure CW to Westwood, after his teams near victory a few years back he could lead them to glory:biggrin:

Recruiting wasn't the problem.

I'm sure you know better than I, but although I'm sure they recruited well, do they have enough to hang with SC (dumb ? as they beat SC last year)
It just seems to me that UCLA fans are like tOSU fans and expect comparable results as our rivals and I'm not sure they have the talent to compete for NC's like SC does. Thus somewhat unreasonable expectations for their current recruiting level. I've been wrong before though (tho not often )

Well recruiting wasn't the only problem :) Is that closer?
Their class ranking incoming was 2008 was 5th - though that is based on size more than quality.
2007's was ranked 36th
2006 20th and 2005 24th.
I'd say recruiting was definitely part of the problem.

Enough to hang with 'SC no - the upset last year notwithstanding.
As for the other part of the problem - having to bring in a walk-on Freshman QB vs. ND ring a bell. That speaks to preparation of the squad and recruiting.

Ron English?

Major connections in California, lethal recruiter, energetic coach. (Shouldn't be an issue but) Hiring English might also lessen the 'firing a minority coach' angle.

If they want him they have to go up against Arkansas - didn't English interview with, or set up an interview with the Hogs recently?

LA Daily News - Hawaii's Jones shows interest in UCLA job; Dorrell a candidate for Duke football job

A lot of smoke out there regarding JJ approaching the Bruins. Jones contract at UH is up, Hawaii's A.D. is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and there have been multiple sources out there discussing this. Some local businessmen/alumni types are supposedly raising outside money to help keep Jones at UH, but will it be enough? FWIW, I have also heard Norm Chow's name being thrown around as a possible candidate at UCLA. Might be something to keep an eye on.
