Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

The next coach at Michigan is screwed for at least 2 years unless they pull off a miracle with their first recruiting class. Tressel, Stoops, and Urban took over programs that were in pretty good condition. Zook was a moron but a great recruiter, the cubards certainly weren't bare. Blake was the same way, Stoops had a ton of talent to work with. Cooper left alot of good players also. I have no idea what LSU was before Saban but I don't think building up a team that has deep football traditions is as hard with SEC oversigning and the conferences overall academic standards. Les Miles took over a program that had recently won a title and he's doing a good job of proving that Saban should get most of the credit for the second. In my opinion Michigan was in good shape as well for anyone but Dick Rod (Mallet for heisman ).

Whoever takes over Michigan gets about sixty 5'10" 160 pound guys to build a philosophy around. Unless you consider the 1-1-9 a viable defense and QB's that can't throw and RB's who can't run inside a viable offense, they really have no strengths to play to. Like Harbaugh is going to walk into that.

The fact that he is potentially the first football coach to be hit with individual sanctions makes me giggle my ass off!

If it comes to be, how will the DickRod slurping underbelly of TSUN fans (not all of them, as a couple here on BP have their head straight on the situation) respond? Man, this could get really fun reading their message boards!

Today, I spent a few hours from a TSUN professor who is world respected. A really nice man with a good sense of humor. He did not realize that he had entered a meeting with two Buckeyes.

Steve19: So...when do you return back to Ann Arbor?

Prof: On the weekend.

Steve19: Say...you wouldn't mind taking back a present for someone would you?

Prof: You have family or a friend in Ann Arbor?

Steve19: Well, yeah! I'm a Buckeye alumni and we all have such high esteem for Bill Martin. We owe him such a debt of gratitude. Do you think I could send a small present for him back with you?

Prof: Uh, he's stepped down.

Steve19: Oh no! You mean he's not in Ann Arbor anymore?

Prof: (laughing) I see what you did there. I'm a Michigan State alumni. Laugh all you want. We'll laugh with you but we'll sing "oh how we hate Ohio State" with them.

It was good fun. At the tip of the African continent and still they get reminded. It was a good day! :)

What would be really funny is if you guys don't land Harbarf. Now that would be epic.

We don't have to land him. I would love to have him though. I'm sure there are plenty of good coaches out there that could get us back to winning. It doesn't have to a big name. You could go to the FCS or Division II and find some good coaches.

I just want a coach that focuses on defense and special teams, run a pro offense/west coast offense, and focuses on a power running game. Maybe the good recruits will come back here and Michigan doesn't have to settle for the tier 2 and 3 players.

That's our RichRod--always finding innovative new ways to set himself apart from the crowd.

Bizarre the off-topic things one runs across, if you're a compulsive researcher. Seeing the above article title, the phrase
"The Cheese Stands Alone" popped into my head (roomy space--almost entirely unfurnished). Trying to place the origin of
the phrase turned up The Farmer in The Dell, and this:

"It also appears as a goal in the Fluxx card game?to win when it is in play, one must have the 'Cheese' card as the only keeper in possession. This "circle game" is played in 49 states but is illegal in Ohio."

I would love to see it. The conclusion to the regular season in recent years has had a lasting effect into the following year. And a bowl win gets people in Columbus so fired up in Jan and Feb they can hardly wait for Aug and Sep to come around again.

The discussion regarding TSUN's reposnse and probation in the the TSUN football thread, and that's where the discussion should exist.

But since RR has a personal stake in this, and he sent his own response, for the record, here's a link to his personal response to the NCAA regarding the violations and his alleged involvement.

RichRod's Response to the NCAA

It's worth looking at this once again.

Summary of RR's contract regarding early termination and termination for cause:

  • section 3.01(b) - contract year one ended 12/31/2008, contract year two ends 12/31/0, and contract year 3 ends 12/31/10.
  • section 4.01(a) - if UM terminates RR without cause in contract years 1, 2 or 3, UM must pay RR $4 million in addition to any other compensation earned at the termination date and unpaid.
  • section 4.02(e) - UM may terminate RR for cause if the NCAA, Big 10 Conference or UM determine RR has committed a major violation of NCAA rules or intentionally committed any other type of violation of NCAA rules.
  • section 4.02(f) - UM may terminate RR for cause if RR has personal knowledge of a violation of NCAA rules by an ass't football coach, football staff member, a member of the team, or any other representative of UM's athletic interests and promptly fails to report it to the AD as called for in section 2.04.
  • section 4.03 - termination for cause relieves UM from any further liability to RR including the termination payment, unearned salary, benefits, etc.
  • section 2.05 - sets forth the due process procedures that must be performed by UM with respect to a determination of NCAA rules violations.

RR's response is tailored specifically because he can be terminated for the above reasons. He's trying to avoid being responsible for a major violation, any intentional violation, and any awareness of somebody on his staff committing a violation.

Thus, according to his response:

- He didn't know his QC coaches were attending 7-on-7s
- He told his QC coaches not to be coaching players, and if they did any of that it was on their own and without his knowledge
- He didn't know his administrative staff went over a year without giving the job descriptions of the QC's to the Office of Compliance
- He had a misunderstanding of any rules that he broke (thus, it wasn't intentional)
- He didn't know the CARA forms weren't submitted for over a year

It makes me wonder if he intentionally didn't have an e-mail account, in order to be able to deny knowledge of things and blame his administrative staff for failures.

Still an ass. And, apparently, an even bigger moron than we all thought.
