Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez: 'I've been here 10 months... Geez' BY MARK SNYDER • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • November 4, 2008

Defensive woes: Coach Rich Rodriguez wouldn't say which defensive schemes will be used against Minnesota. "The next few games," he said, "who knows? It wouldn't make any sense for me to tell you now what we're going to do the next three ballgames."

He added that players need to improve their fundamentals to solve the problems that led to more than 500 yards of offense and 48 points by Purdue. "Not to belabor the point on schemes, but schemes don't cause you to miss 21 tackles. Schemes don't cause you to not get off a block 25 different times or stuff like that. It's not like the players aren't trying hard. But there's a lot of fundamentals we got to work on as well as schemes."
Stand by your man: Rodriguez wouldn't comment on the job done by defensive coordinator Scott Shafer, saying it's "unfair" to ask him to criticize a coach or player. "I'm never going to point a finger," he said. "Because we struggled at times in different units doesn't mean they're a bad coach."

More from Rodriguez: "I'm sure a lot of people are saying that I'm a bad coach. Everybody can have their opinion. But I've been here 10 months. I feel as good as I have as far as I know we can build this program to be one of the best in the country. It's not showing that right now, but we can do that. It may take us longer than what I thought. ... We'll get it right. I mean, everybody wants to push the panic button. Ten months, geez."
