Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

pm grad21 to get the entire story so he doesn't have to air the laundry here in public.

I'm sure he'd give you the details if you agree to have an adult conversation about it.

I don't how I missed this conversation.

My initial comments were mainly geared towards:

1) the behavior at practices and lack of "restraint." That part has already had some repercussions and I can see it getting worse.

2) Minor recruiting violations that I personally witnessed.

Braylon Edwards was on Tirico and Van Pelt earlier today (ESPN radio). They asked him what he thought about DickRod. He started off by saying, "Well he gave the #1 jersey to an incoming freshman DB. The jersey has never been worn by someone other than a WR." He didn't sound too happy. Then he said that he thinks DickRod is gonna do a good job.

Sounds like RR is ruffling some feathers up in AA.

Did he really do this? I thought he was embracing the tradition? Granted, that's a small tradition, but still...

Most traditions are small traditions. You either get it or you don't - and RR is NOT a Michigan man. Give him five years and he will be the definitive "Michigan Man" - but guys like Bo no longer will be.

5 Years! I think he's already the defenitive "Michigan Man." Let's see here:

1. Jackass........................................Check

2. Dumbass...................................... Check

3. School Boy Bitch............................Check

Yeah I'd say that pretty much covers it.

Braylon has a right to be pissed. He set up a $500,000 endowment to U-M to cover the scholarship associated to whichever player wore #1, but it was under the stipulation that Edwards and Anthony Carter chose who wore the number.

Now, prior to Braylon's donation, U-M's legacy of #1 going to a top WR was no more a tradition than OSU's string of having a skill position player whose name begins with the letter 'G' getting the #7 jersey -- it's more a coincidence or an organized thing among the players who've requested the number, but its hardly a tradition.

Although, once a former player gives his alma mater half a million dollars of his own money, all bets are off.

I'd say it's far more of a tradition than OSU's number 7. It might not be a very old tradition but it's a tradition nonetheless.

According to Michigan's website, since Carter first wore the Jersey in 1978, these are the players who have worn the #1:

79-82 -- Anthony Carter (Carter led the team in TDs all four years, and in receiving yardage from 80-82)
86-89 -- Greg McMurtry (McMurtry was 2nd on the team in yardage in 86 and in touchdowns in 88. He led the team in yardage from 87-89 and in touchdowns in 87 and 89)
90-93 -- Derrick Alexander (Alexander was 2nd on the team in yardage in 1990, and touchdowns in 1990 and 1993. He missed most of 1991 with an injury but led the team in yardage in 92 and 93 and touchdowns in 92.)
94-96 -- Tyrone Butterfield (Butterfield was the one player donning #1 in the past 30 years to not be the teams top receiver. As a WR he was used sparingly but did lead the team in kickoff return yardage in 96.)
98-00 -- David Terrell (Terrell came in very highly touted, and finished tied for a distant 2nd in TDs in 98 but was used only sparingly. He led the team in TDs and yardage in 99 and 00.)
03-04 -- Braylon Edwards (Edwards led the team in yardage and TDs in 03 and 04.)

If I recall correctly, Carr wouldn't even let Edwards wear #1 until he felt Edwards lived up to his potential.

So there you have it. Since 1979, six players have worn #1 and all have been WRs. Five of the six have been the top option at some point in their career.

Of the 20 years the number has been issued (19 with a healthy player), the player who has worn it has led the team in TDs 11 times, finishing 2nd 4 times. They have led the team in yardage 12 times, and finished 2nd twice.

Who's No. 1 at Michigan? Not Braylon's choice

Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News

The No. 1 jersey at Michigan has been associated with wide receivers since 1979.
So imagine the surprise of Braylon Edwards, the last Wolverine to wear the number and who has since endowed a $500,000 scholarship for the player who wears No. 1, when he learned an incoming freshman defensive back would have that jersey this fall.
Edwards, during an interview Tuesday on ESPN Radio's "Mike Tirico Show," was asked about the scene at Michigan under new coach Rich Rodriguez. He quickly stated his beef regarding the jersey.

I keep seeing scUM fans say they just got rid of their Cooper and I had some thoughts on that.

I think they just got rid of their Earle. A class guy who didn't win enough to satisfy the machine but did everything else right. A guy who was overall competent in The Game but things had slid badly toward the end. Earle was 5-4 in The Game while LC was 6-7. Earle was more consistent and won his last game but one game over or one game under is about the same record in a rivalry game.

If you'll remember when Earle left our program was in bad shape. We just didn't have the athletes across the board that other programs had. There were a few standouts(Cris Carter, Spielman, etc) even up to the end but the overall depth of talent was sorely lacking.

At this same time scUM had Bo at the height of his powers. Late 80's early 90's scUM was rattling off streaks of B10 titles like it was going out of style and were the only consistent national power in the B10.

Then of course after the shitty way we let Earle go they go and hire a "name" coach who they thought would be the type to come in and take us to the next level. Never mind his track record of failure in rivalry games, never mind him being an outsider that doesn't "get" The Game, never mind he doesn't "get" OSU's tradition or ties to Ohio HS coaches, give him the resources at OSU and he'll dominate. Well he did well from '94-'98 but we all know how it turned out overall.

This is where I see scUM right now. They just lost a good man who wasn't winning enough(albeit by different circumstances) and to fight back against the impending mediocrity they try and make a splash with a proven outsider, ignoring several obvious blemishes on his record in their desire for the wish to become reality. IMO they are going to get a taste of where we were in that late 80's early 90's time period while we have a living legend at the height of his powers. Dick Rod does not concern me, its the guy who comes in after him to pick up the pieces that will be a problem.

Just got rid of their Cooper? They just hired him.

To keep myself from retyping the whole thing....I'm telling you they just hired their Coop.

Traditions mean less to outsiders that don't get them than they do to insiders who do get them.

How hilarious is it that it isn't the shitty things this asshole does that bother the Michigan fans.....it's the tiniest bullshit excuse for something to get pissed about. the number on somebodies jersey? really? he had his friends lie about WVU being racist to make him seem like the good guy in this mess of a lawsuit....and giving away the #1 jersey causes this much trouble?

Correct. My point though is that "the tradition" of earning the #1 begins and ends with Braylon Edwards. Prior to Edwards, WRs since AC may have received the #1, but there were some four year guys in there, and none of those guys since '79 were true 'bridges' from Carter to Edwards. I don't know that any of those WRs other than Braylon (that I'm aware of) wore a different number prior to getting #1 as an upperclassman other than in the situation the #1 was already being held by another teammate. The guys preceding AC to have the number were a kick specialist and a safety, so as a tradition, it only dates back to '79. That's not really much of a tradition at all. We're not talking about an all-world receiving corp here. Sure, those guys were mostly pretty good, and AC and BE were special, but I don't know that I'd take any of U-M's "#1s" over any of OSU's "#7s" (Ginn, Gamble, Germaine, Galloway, Gordon, Greene).
