Return to the Glory Days

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
Getting a top recruit (Daequan Cook) creates the excitment of the Ohio State basketball team is going in the right direction and might be competing for the national championship in the next few years. Looking back at some of the great teams of the past; what past starting fives on the Ohio State basketball teams were your favorites and/or you think were the best?

Go to the following site for a complete list: http://www.collegesports.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/osu/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/traditions2 pages 3 & 4

My top 5 are:
1. 1960 (JerryLucas, John Havlicek, Larry Siegfried, Mel Nowell, & Joe Roberts)
2. 1961 (Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Larry Siegfried, Mel Nowell, & Richie Hoyt)
3. 1980 (Herb Williams, Clark Kellogg, Jim Smith, Kelvin Ransey, & Carter Scott)
4. 1992 (Chris Jent, Jim Jackson, Mark Baker, Jamaal Brown, & Lawerance Funderburke)
5. 1971 (Luke Witte, Allan Hornyak, Mark Minor, Mark Wager, & Jim Cleamons)

The 1968 team (Hosket, Howell, Sorenson, Finney, Meadors) that made the FInal 4 was pretty good too. I'd probably put them third or fourth...there's no arguing the top 2.

I'd rank 'em in date order, starting with the 1960 team. Solid on and off the court. I'd also put the 1968 team and a Gary Bradds team in there too ('63 with Ricketts and Riesbeck in the backcourt).

I haven't felt so positive about OSU basketball since Fred Taylor resigned.

To accurately use the term "Glory Days" you pretty much have to go back to the '60s. We have had some great teams since then, but never a program that was consistently a factor in the National Rankings. We have only been ranked back-to-back Top Ten once since '62 and '63 and only back-to-back Top Twenty twice since 1972.

OSU has been a sleeping giant for many years for a number of reasons but if Matta stays around that is about to change.

That said, I would also like to see Bradds mentioned and would probably opt for '63 with Bradds, Doughty, McDonals, Ricketts, and Reasbeck.

Being a buckeye fan in his 20s, I have a special affinity for the 91 and 92 squads. I loved the depth of those teams. Beyond just the starting five of Jackson, Baker, Brown, Funderburke, and Jent, you have Skelton, Treg Lee, Perry Carter, and big Bill Robinson. I really enjoyed watching that team play. Broke my heart when we lost that elite 8 game to the now-non-existent, and never should have been Fab 5.

I personally liked the 99 and 00 lineups with Penn, Redd, and Johnson.

Two words. ROLE PLAYERS! No team I've ever watched knew thier roles like that squad. It was amazing watching their unselfishness and team-work. Big George Reece, whom improved drastically from game to game and Jason Singleton, whom could guard any teams best scorer and give them fits, are like gold in this age of modern basketball. We will probably never see another team like the 90's UNLV or Duke teams because so many players jump to the NBA. Here's to hoping the collective bargaining agreement turns out and makes college basketball amazing again!

Why did he transfer?
The OSU program was being put on probation under Randy Ayers and the program was in disaray. :smash:

Back to the topic of the thread......

Since I was not born for the glory days of the sixties I will just name my top five while I have been alive...

1. 1991 (Jamaal Brown, Mark Baker, Perry Carter, Jim Jackson, Treg Lee)
(27-4)
2. 1992 (Chris Jent, Lawrence Funderburke, Jim Jackson, Mark Baker, Jamaal
Brown) (26-6)
3. 1987 (Dennis Hopson, Jerry Francis, John Anderson, Curtis Wilson, Jay
Burson) (20-13)
4. 1999 (Jason Singleton, Jon Sanderson, Ken Johnson, Michael Redd, Scoonie
Penn) (27-9)
5. 2000 (George Reese, Ken Johnson, Brian Brown, Michael Redd, Scoonie
Penn) (23-7)

Amen.

I took the B-ball coaching course from him in 67. Very funny, very intelligent and a man who turned out other great coaches including Bobby Knight.

Left unsaid in the stories about his firing was that he refused to cave in and make illegal offers to keep players from going to other schools.

Fred Taylor is one of the greatest coaches that ever lived...and Bobby Knight would be the first to say so. It's the only way that it's too bad that Ohio State is a "football" school, that Taylor doesn't get the recognition he deserves had he coached somewhere that basketball is a religion like UCLA or Indiana or Kansas.
