Restaurants in Austin/San Antonio

Cornerback6

Optimism Lover
So my girlfriend is visiting here in 2 weeks and I really want to take her to a couple of nice places. I've only lived in Texas a bit but I'm getting acclimated to my surroundings until I head over to Afghanistan here in a bit. Was wondering if any of you have had any fine dining experiences in Austin or San Antonio? I figured who better to ask than my Buckeye brethren...

Maybe something young & romantic? Any advice or sweet restaurant suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Pretty much anything down on the riverwalk is going to give you above average food. I stay away from anything that's a chain that I can get someplace else though.
My wife and I are huge fans of Canyon Cafe down at the Quarry and it's a short distance from Fort Sam. About a $16 dollar cab ride. While you're there check out the "Whole Earth Provision" store. Lots of high quality camping/hiking/outdoor gear. I picked up a few things there that I usually have to order online

Thanks for the advice Boxcar...though I'll only be in San Antonio for about 48 hours so straying far from downtown isn't so likely. Actually staying in a hotel on the riverwalk so yeah, I'll probably be eating in that neck of the woods.

I've always been a big fan of Boudro's on the riverwalk...Iron Cactus has always looked good but I've not made it in there yet.

If you want good cheap burgers, Fatty's over by Sunset Station fits the bill. I prefer Chester's but it's a good deal north of the city.

I'll have to check out Boudro's next time I'm in SA. "Iron Cactus" is the best Mexican food I've had on the Riverwalk. Also, check out "County Line" BBQ on the Riverwalk. I think it's the best BBQ in Texas.

Edit: Just read you were looking for "Young and Romantic". "Iron Cactus" would work but scratch "County Line".

riverwalk is fun, certainly from what your circumstances seem like. this time of year you usually can get a good deal at a hotel on the riverwalk. i had a really good meal at a mexican place a few years ago on the ut campus.

thanks for your service and enjoy your time with the gf

The Oasis. Best place to see the sunset in Texas.
