I have seen suggestions that we should reset the vBook and get everyone back to $500.

Not a fan of this myself but I thought I would start a thread to discuss the idea - fair and balanced that I am. (Since I can't even do the reset myself I am only assuming it can still be done.)

I understand that many folks on the board are at zero, and that is frustrating. But my experience is that they didn't get there by losing 10 or 20 bets in a row. They see a sure thing and throw it all out there - and lose. Giving them another $500 only solves the problem until the first bet is settled.

On the other hand, those who have some serious vCash earned it (we can't reset selectively - it is everyone or no one).

Further, every time a new book is opened everyone who is at zero is automatically credited $25. So they aren't locked out.

If anyone has a serious argument why we should reset I am listening (albeit I am Bill O'Reilly listening, not Michael Jackson Jury listening) .

We either do it in the next few days or not at all.
 
its a nice idea, however its not fair to those who have earned there vCash through winning bets. im not one of those so dont gang up on me, im one of the ones that lost vCash but i still dont see it as being fair.

Good thoughts. I have 2 ideas:

1. Move this to the Open Discussion forum
2. You are awarded 10 vBucks for every 1 real buck you donate to the planet. Granted, this causes crazy inflation in vDollars, but who really gives a rat's ass.

My opinion is to let it play out without the reset...I was dead broke last football season because my asinine homer self always took the Bucks to cover...

I made a nice rebound though...even though it looks like I am low right now, I have money tied up in long-term bets we have running.

I vote keep it as it is.

Hmm.

Some pretty big changes and adjustments are coming with the upgrade from vBulletin 3.0.1, to 3.5.0.

One thing that's changing is the "money" system we use for the book. We're moving to something that will afford a lot of new options, many that have been requested, some that I just think are cool.

For example. Volunteers around the site will get weekly "paychecks" of sorts. People who donate will get little bonuses related to that. Everyone will get little participation bonuses, relative to how active they are around the site in any capacity, volunteering, moderating, posting, whatever. Users will be able to transfer bpCash between one another. Users will even be able to try and steal some from others (more on that down the road). bpCash will start to have more of a purpose around the site than just bragging rights. You'll be able to tweak your account in fun (but largely cosmetic) ways. You'll be able to make use of some new "extras" around the site. Private hideaway forums you can create (and invite who you desire). Personal pages tied to your user accounts. Etc. I'm also looking into having the Book tweaked to allow private person-to-person bets between users, handled through the PM system.

Because the very mechanism that handles our "money" now is being abandoned in favor of something much more robust, that means that I'm going to have to figure out a way to convert what we have now, to the new form. Or, reset everyone and start from scratch.

I would prefer to convert and import all the present totals. If I can't, then I'm thinking about making a cutoff point where anyone above, I'll record their balance by hand, and reset it in the new system manually. Either way, we'll figure something out. There's also an issue where everyone who was a user when I first implemented the Book got $1000 vCash, and all new users have received $500. A lot of different little variables to consider, correct, account for, etc.

Anyway, no matter how it gets handled, everyone will have *some* of the new currency to play with. The question will just be how much.

So, this is a good thread, and there's plenty to consider. Just factor in what I've said above, and discuss how you'd most like to see it handled.

Then start thinking about who you might want to try to steal from, and wonder what the consequences are if you fail. :biggrin:

As long as I'm rambling about upcoming changes, here are some other bits;

- true text searching with a minimum character value of 2.
- live NNTP/Usenet gateway to OSU and college related newsgroups.
- major arcade overhaul, too much to mention
- AJAX editing. Edit your post or post title without the page ever reloading.
- competitive topical quiz events with full stat/history tracking
- reworked pick'em
- new and fully integrated gallery
- reworked chat functionality
- the possibility of live radio streams playable on site (sports radio and game broadcasts come to mind)
- reworked award system. Categories, requests, nominations, etc.
- attachments in private messages
- private ability to search your own PMs
- reputation adjustments (although a major change is still on the horizon)
- all new user-selectable themes for the site. What you see now is BP_DayGame. There's already BP_NightGame, and BP_AfternoonGame. Working on streamlined 'spartan' themes for cells and PDAs.
- major enhancements to BP's ability to serve as a media nexus for things created or hosted locally. Local hosting, mirroring capacity, possibly an integrated solution for BitTorrent users.
- better forum home navigation. forums currently nested 3-4 levels deep now one-click navigable from the home.
- tons of user requested tweaks from the "Terrible twos" thread.

There's a lot more, but I've had enough typing. More later. Discuss vCash/bpCash. :)
