Reputation Points Question

Just adding my 2 cents on this topic.

I personally have no problem with the reputation aspect of the Planet. As Clarity said, if you don't like it simply ignore it. I can take it or leave it. The only "problem" I have with it, and it hasn't affected me to this point, is that if someone feels the need to ding another poster for something that person said, the very LEAST they could do is have the balls to put their name to the negative post and not hide behind anonymity. Be man or woman enough to own up to what you say or said to or about another poster.

OK.....stepping off the soapbox now. Over and out.

Do you accumulate "reputation points" if nobody comments about you? Before mine was disabled, I was a "Buckeye Verbal", but had no comments, so I'm just curious as to whether that is what everyone starts with, or somehow I was bumped up or down without anyone leaving any comments. And then, there's always the strong possibility that I am just too stupid to actually find what I'm looking for...

--edit--

After double-checking my "User CP" I see I have 24 reputation points, but I still don't see any comments. So obviously you can accumulate points without the comments?

You quietly accumulate points for different types of activities. A point every X posts, another every Y days you're on the site, that type of thing.

Everyone starts with 10 points.

I finally figured out how to see the comments... funny how the good points have comments and the bad points are left blank (and the two that have the blanks aren't bad posts at all... I guess somebody accidently zapped me??)...

I don't have a comment about the reputation points. I was wondering how anyone could have voted this thread so low. A one out of five. The posts are flowing along, everyone is getting informed. No negativity. Then it gets one star. (I guess that's the negativity.)

Is there a way to find out who votes, who ranks the threads?

anyone can rank a thread. Look right above the top post on any page of a thread and you can give it a 1-5 star rating. It's right next to "Thread Tools" and "Search This Thread". Not sure if you can tell who ranked it.

I have explained the "rep" points several times. I have done so because I think some folks don't understand how they work (or even what the feature is). I got dinged on a joke I posted in the Romer Room (No comment, no name). It was probably the lest offensive post on the whole board. I just chalked it up to someone pressing the "rep" button, not realizing what they were doing, and inadvertently giving out some negative points. It happens. That's why I keep letting people know what the "rep" points are about.
cool... so when i click on the "add to Clarity's reputation" button, how the hell do i know if i'm adding positive response or negative? where is the option??? i looked at my CP, and i don't see anything in EDIT Options... all i get is a screen refresh, and sometimes, if i right click, a new window with a previous post... at NO point have i been presented w/ the option of adding a comment, or the choice of whether my feedback is positive or negative... sorry if i have dinged someone unwittingly... though apparently, people have commented on MY posts, per my User CP...

sorry to bump an old thread, but... WTF?!?!?!?!???

-edit-
NM... i figured it out... maybe in the original post, you should mention that the reputation feature is a POP UP... my pop up blocker wasn't letting it through... i feel kinda dumb, but then again, i drank 5 :beer:s before i figured it out... Duh...

I had a minor stink about rep points a few days back as some of you may recall. My issue was that I was being dinged for things that were later resolved in the thread, which I didn't think was fair. That is, I said something on like page 2 to a poster with in good standing round here, some people didn't like it, but later that individual and I worked it out and now actually appear to enjoy eachother's "on-line company" or what have you. So, in the spirit of self policing as BP desires, I'd just say everyone should be reasonable with their Rep points - as clarity explained, reasonablness increases your throw anyway.

The usefulness of Rep points has to be cautioned against a great many things, I suppose. But, I can tell you, when I see a shit load of points, If I don't know the guys posting history, I'm going to be more apt to believe whatver he's saying (Football that is, not politics) than otherwise.

SOmeone mentioned that they got dinged for their politcal assertions. That is just in poor taste. It's one thing to make an absurd inflammatory post regarding politics - that maybe should be dinged... but if I say "I'm a democrat and I think Bla bla bla" I shouldn't get dinged just because you disagree with my ideology. Not a whole lot can be done about it, at an admin level, I would think. So, as I mentioned, just be smart about it.

Annonymous opinions are generally meaningless too... If you feel strongly enough about something to vote on rep, have the stones to sign it.

Ooops, sorry LV, I never even thought about the pop-up screen being blocked. Once you see that screen it is all pretty obvious. I approve - OR - I disapprove ... then leave a message if you want. I think the board in general wants the standard to be that you should indentify yourself in the message field. Although there is no need to do so. The system is set up to be anonymous so that members feel free to give honest feedback. Giving these points in secret will lead some folks to abuse the system ... but that's the case with anything.

I've dinged people for politics before, but it was exactly what you said... they were making absurd inflammatory posts... not just debating and defending a position I disagreed with. I was amused when this person then took it to the board claiming they were being dinged just for having a different opinion. The world is just out to get some people through no fault of their own. :wink2:

Personally, I don't ding anyone. LouisHMartinez doesn't count, of course. But I believe he is the only one I have ever "dinged", and I don't see myself dinging anyone in the future, either. To me, I would rather call someone out and debate them in "public", as opposed to dinging them privately and/or anonymously. The rep. points are a neat feature, but a lot of people seem to get pretty worked up over them. I guess there will always be the "pot stirrers" out there who will try to ruin something for everyone. (Tibor) But I'm not going to mention any names...
