I think it should be restured with a few changes. For example, I think it's become too easy to max it out. I think that it should be easier to get your first emerald and it should become gradually harder to make it to the top, that way the truly elite posters will become evident without checking out the rankings on the member list. I also think it should be mandatory to enter a reason for a rep boost or a ding...even if we don't require a signing (which I would be okay with also). I also think a members "tendencies" should be monitered. For instance, everyones ratio of positive/negative reputations should be kept. If a person has a history of giving out a lot of dings as compared to rep boosts, a ding from them wouldn't have as much effect. Also, I think the period of time or number of reputation evaluations should increase between instances in which you can evaluate their rep again. I REALLY like the fact that those with higher reps have more weight than low reps...PLEASE keep that! I would be interested in hearing your primary concerns about the system, and I'd be glad to give you my own opinions on the areas.

These are just suggestions, nothing major. I like the rep system as it is, but also think it COULD be better. Great work on keeping the site great and never getting stagnant. Constant improvement!

I like to add to what Bucknut11, ScarletInMyVeins and FKA877 mentioned. The points awarded per ding is what needs tweaking the most. Within my first 20 posts I was a "BP Legend". Just didn't seem right to me.

It needs to get scaled down where 1-2 people can't bring someone who had positive green to negative red. Or where those 2 people can't take someone with no rep and make them a "legend" overnight. It needs to be made into an accomplishment to fill up your green jewels and take time and many great posts to do that.

Just my $.02

I have a couple of points...

1 - I like the reputation points system.

While it has it's flaws, there are at least two benefits:

A) It helps filter out and "rank" members who don't say much of substance - even if they have 500 or 1,500 posts.

B) Secretly, we all want to be recognized and rewarded for our contribution. This is an easy way to do that. I find it similar to Jim Rome's "huge call of the day".

2 - I agree with what others have said above - you can't ding someone anonymously. Whenever someone dings me, and they leave their name, I usually follow up with a PM. Then you can clear up any misunderstandings without including the entire board.

3 - Though I don't get dinged much - perhaps b/c I don't post much - it seems that there are a few with itchy trigger fingers out there. They just can't wait to ding someone. Why not limit the amount of dings you can dish out per day or per week?

4 - This is frivolous - but could we change the green chicklets to buckeye leaves and the red rubies to a winged helmut?

5 - More than maxing out the number of chicklets or rubies, I would like to see a more consistent structure to the ranking; e.g. "revered BP poster, BP legend, Tressel call this BP poster for advice". It's all fun - but what does it all mean?

6 - I like the "weighted" points system. In my world of pension administration - individuals who are older and earn a higher compensation are actuarialy "worth" more than someone who is younger and earns less. It's what make the retirement plan world go 'round. So, - I'm trying to make an analogous point - if you get praised an older and "richer" (i.e. reputation) member - it should be worth more than if you are praised by a Newbie.

Thanks for taking my input.

The rep system is one of the things that makes this site unique for me. Their is always going to be some whiny ass bastard crying about a rep ding. But eliminating the anonymous dings is a great start. I agree that it can be too easy to max out. I haven't been here long and my rep is pretty high. (Then again maybe I just kick ass...) Maybe scale down the effect high rep people have to a maximum amount. Like maybe 150 points. When Mili gives rep, chiclets come in droves.

I vote to make minor modifications and let the jewelry live.

Thanks again Clarity for maintaining sanity on the boards.

Lose it. My second choice would be a highly modified version if it returns. Either complete anonymity (not even comments allowed) or complete disclosure. Some of the stuff that is written in the comments is bad ... I mean way over the top, bad, foul, offensive.

Perhaps diluting them, so that you got a bean for every fifth positive or megative post would make them more precious. But that might also cause chicklet inflation, with people handing them out like candy.

How about replacing the green chicklets with green paint chips that are worth 10 chicklets or would we be able to use buckeye leafs? Edit- How about you keep the green chicklets the way they are, but for every 10 chicklets you get 1 buckeye leaf and go back to 0 chicklets?

Some other thoughts:

-I think ding-backs would need to be taken into account. I like the 3 day limit.

-Re-dings also need to be taken into account. Should only be able to ding someone once for every 10 posts they make or something like that.

-The time limits for positive rep doesn't need to be as strict. If someone gives me rep for a post and then make a good post of their own I should be able to give them rep as well.

-Whatever changes are made should not be retroactive. Let past anonymous dings stay anonymous. Maybe just reset the rep system all together.

-There should be a limit to how much power someone's rep gives them. A newbie shouldn't have the same rep power as 21 or Mili, but good rep from 21 shouldn't kick someone up more than 1 chicklet.

-It would be cool if dings could work similar to the warning system. If someone gets -5 rep (5 more dings than rep) in one day they get banned for a day. If they get -10 the mods/admin should look into banning them.

-dings from someone with a bunch of rubies shouldn't hurt your rep.

Modify & Restore

Those green chiclets have some merit.

Modifications Suggested
1 -- Like others here suggest you add an auto-signature.
2 -- Use a void comment = no count feature.
3 -- Have an order of magnitude higher icon (again this is like others suggestions). Get your 10 green chiclets. Over that have a green chiclet of greater size representing all 10 prior earned chiclets, plus the regular sized chiclet for next earned unit of rep points.
4 -- Any way to fix the silver chiclet occurence. This (as I now understand it) means the rep giver did not have the earned rep to give rep - or was otherwise disabled from conferring rep to others.
Either -- message to rep deficient rep giver that this won't count, or;
Better I think -- Activate given rep after rep giver has the rep to give and take rep to others.
5 -- If you are doing 4 then what about a "time delay" for activating rep with newer posters. Guys I'm gratified that some folks thought highly enough of what I wote to give rep pretty quickly. I'd have been happy to wait though through some kind of provisional rep sytem.
6 -- Add an explanantion of the chiclets system (with a link to a reference thread as appropriate) to your FAQ.
7 -- All changes pro-active, from this point forward.
Ba Da Ba Da thats all folks.

- as everybody else has said, full disclosure. attach a name to it

- max quota per day of negative reps given out, either a solid number or one variable upon number of positive reps handed out. this way you can't have a troll go and give out 50 negative reps in one day

- reps from people that have been banned are erased from the system. might be hard to implement, but some flamer that hands out a bunch of negative reps shouldn't count towards anybody's total

- harder to reach the "top" level (or bottom) as stated by others

- a rep-to-vCash transfer would be a good way for someone that is vBroke to earn some more money to play around with, provided they have a good rep

i would definitely keep the rep system in some form. not so much for the regulars, but so a newb that is trying to get a feel for the place could tell whether he was getting comments from a troll or someone highly respected by others.

I don't know how hard it would be to do... but- would it be possible when you click on the "add to ____ reputation" button for it to list the rep already given and comments in the box.

This would be good for two reasons... first, people would be less likely to be real jerkoffs if they knew anyone could see it and then they would need to have a good reason for a ding other than just because they don't like someone. The other thing is... if someone already has 4 or 5 positive comments... I'm probably not going to give them anymore... I mean the dude who broke the ND story probably got all the rep he deserved, but I've seen other people just get assloads of rep for pretty average posts because they are new or what ever...

Also... someone mentioned having levels of positive or negative hits... this seems like a good idea....

At least, you know.... Rookie Good Post, good, and excellent... on the good size and, Rookie Hazing, Moron and Flamer or somthing on the bad size.. I'm sure the mods or someone else could refine that idea some.

I like the reputation feature.. I just think it gets misused...
maybe we need two features... a Rep rating and a Posting rating

1) to make a judgement on reputation and
2) to make a judgement on whether you agree/like vs disagree/dislike the content of the posting

You shouldn't get rep points merely for posting an item that agrees with someone else's thinking... but rather if someone is impressed with the poster, per se... including a poster's style of personal interaction, their thought process, intellect, content expertise...

And you shouldn't get dinged merely for having a different opinion... the content of this board would be much more intellectually stimulating if there really was freedom of speech without having your reputation come under fire because you think differently on a topic..

rep rating impact should not be anonymous... should be sys feature to tag source... I don't think the sys needs to monitor posting rating source...

I also feel we should have ability to change rep rating later... including ability to change the attached message to a rep rating...

Beautifully put. I would throw you an emerald if I could .

Its not a bad idea overall, but I think too many people use it to punish ideas that they dont like, rather than really uncalled for posts.

Also, HATE that its anonymous. Such a candy ass way of trying to lash out at someone.
