Thanks to tedginn05's whining about reps, I decided to find out about how negative points are figured. I had guessed earlier in this thread that negative reps are based on around half your rep power (whereas postive reps are based on full rep power). I checked tedginn05's rep points before and after I dinged him, and sure enough my ding deducted points equal to exactly half of my rep power. So, if you check your own rep power, you know that giving a positive rep to someone will give him/her that many points, and dinging them will take away half that amount.

And there you have it...

The ding was for reasons already discussed...or an apparent pattern of said behavior. Then I believe you falsely accused LJB of giving you a ding last week...ummm asshat, asshole, etc?
