Rep Circles
Unless you actually have an agreement with people to inflate each other's rep, forget about it; you don't even need to read this. However, if there seems to be a pattern of reps almost always to the same small group, and if a bunch of them seem to be random (say, repping someone on posts that are just smilies), if there's rarely a missed day repping the same people, and if you actually mention trying to inflate each other's rep, there might be an issue. We're talking about very blatant stuff... for example, the posters who used to register multiple accounts just to rep each other. That's just silly... at least invent pretend friends on MySpace where everyone can see the self-congratulatory messages. Here, all it takes is a few good posts and converse with the people you like... voila!
If you think certain people make a bunch of good posts, rep them for it. If they post something you find especially funny, rep them for that. No big deal if the same names come up repeatedly. But we're really looking to recognize good posts and not just the posts of our cliques. Spread out the rep, find posts you like and rep them regardless of whether you normally interact with the poster. Every now and then I'll rep someone and get a PM that it's the first rep they've received - and I'll be shocked that someone who has been a good poster for ages never gets recognized because maybe they don't goof around in OD so much and they get taken for granted. Be on the lookout for those people and green 'em up.
The Etiquette of Reciprocal Reps
Personally, I rarely return a rep just because I received one, and I don't expect a return rep when I give one. It happens, particularly if I'm having fun interacting with someone on the board, but IMO there is no obligation. If someone writes an especially thoughtful message rather than just a smilie or something, the conversation might continue in PMs.
The thing I don't like about reciprocal reps is that it turns the system into not a way to recognize good posts, but a barter system. With reps limited per day, if every rep required a return rep, then only half the reps on the board would be for quality posts, and the other half would be reciprocal.
Actually, any mindset that makes a big deal of rep seems pretty silly to me... above thesis notwithstanding. It's fun to get messages about posts, but who cares about the points? Heck, I'm up there but it's almost entirely due to silly posts and much too much time online... not hours of updates or working up statistics or writing game previews or building relationships that bring us fantastic recruiting info. Have to take this system with a gigantic grain of salt... which would pretty much solve the issues we've had with it lately.
