And the scapegoating of Joe Paterno begins ...

How long will it be before people start to think Paterno was actually the one buggering the kids? The Court of Public Opinion states that the accused is guilty until proven innocent. I'm sure this "effort" will be successful, and maybe it will be shown to have been appropriate.

Scapegoating indeed. Do these words for PSU's trustees have any meaning?

Penn State has always strived for honesty, integrity and the highest moral standards in all of its programs. We will not tolerate any violation of these principles. We educate over 95,000 students every year and we take this responsibility very seriously. We are dedicated to protecting those who are placed in our care. We promise you that we are committed to restoring public trust in the University.

My question is, 'Why the fuck was it on there to begin with?' In 17 years he won 1 title outright and shared 2 more with Jim Tressel

Exactly what I was thinking as well. Shouldn't it have been the Hayes-Schembechler? You know, from schools that actually have won the Big Ten a ton of times and have been in the conference for more than 20 years.

Please forward me your resume so I can make sure I never hire you for a position that would entail authority of any sort.
Not necessary. I'd never be in the position of applying for a job wherein I'd be working for you.

:box:

This whole discussion is distasteful, and there's really no one involved whom I feel comfortable defending. My problem is more with people rushing to judgment for the "easy solution" to a truly baffling problem - why did Penn State not initiate an investigation of Sandusky and his activities? I really do put the responsibility for this failure mostly at the feet of McQueary and the athletic director. But an online petition to remove Paterno's name from an award is motivated by nothing more than a desire for people to feel superior to someone in power, and not by any real concern for the damaged youth.

If you feel compassion for the abused kids, let me suggest that rather than signing this "petition" you go out and volunteer at a shelter, or donate a couple hundred bucks to a counseling center.

I agree.
I'd sign the petition, but really more because I agree with the "What was it doing there in the first place?" opinion. It isn't going to change what happened to however many kids were abused. It isn't going to get him fired sooner rather than later. Or later rather than sooner. Does this petition even carry any weight in the eyes of the Big Ten?

You'd think that just this once, Max wouldn't play the contrarian, given how despicable and unfathomable the behavior of Joe, Curley and others was in this mess.
Just to reiterate - there's really nobody in this whole quagmire that I feel comfortable defending. Want to see the whole thing over and everybody who deserves to be in jail, to be there. I don't think I'm contrary to anyone in my primary wishes - some things everyone agrees on (except some small minority who will not be mentioned).

holy jump to conclusions mat, Batman.

Right now, and probably forever, the name and legacy of Paterno is this scandal. That is too shameful to be associated with the league championship.

obviously this isn't going to help troubled kids like donating or serving at a shelter, but it is a huge leap to get from there to wanting to tear down someone simply because they are in power.
