REFUTED: Wishbone for Fiesta Bowl?!

Grad, if the Bone is used for teams w/out much speed on offense, why the hell would we be running it? Thanks for the info.

Well, if Mili's info is correct, it might be more of a power set because the coaches feel ND's DL and LBs are mismatched. Without a board to draw it up, try to picture this...you have your bone formation (I would actually think Johnson as #3 (FB) with Haw and Pitt as #'s 2 & 4(the split backs behind the FB). You run powers with the FB and opposite near back leading the charge through the hole. So, if you are running a 46 power (off tackle to the right) you would get the line washing down inside with the tackle posting and moving to the LB, the right HB heading to the DE to kick-out and the FB then leading through the hole.

As for the Flex, the deep motion (orbit) would cause one side to freeze which does utilize the speed...and there are so many variations of motion, option, and misdirection in the flex that it is too much to discuss here.

Basically, we can do plenty of the same stuff in the spread...

You don't need three stud backs, but like everyone else has been saying, you need versatile backs that are tough and can block. The Wishbone is alot of misdirection so the defense doesn't know who is getting the ball every play. You might counter the fullback one way, pull a guard, and send the back one of the two ways. Its a formation with a bunch of basic plays that you can tweak a little bit to give the defense a different look. Should be interesting to see how they utilize it... if at all.

On Wall-To-Wall Sports last night, they reporters were asking the guys whether or not there will be "more wrinkles in the offense"/"more wide open offense" for the bowl game. Got some interesting answers. Holmes claimed that the we were gonna be "REALLY wide open", Troy had a conservative Tressel-like answer, and they asked another player (can't remember who) that said we were gonna be wide open for the game.

Not sure how far you could read between those lines, but it certainly seems like we have some tricks up our sleeves for the bowl game.

Just got back into town to celebrate with the family and Nick Mangold told the CBS guy (Dom Tiberi?) that OSU would be running a center sneak -- whether it is called or not.

Maybe each guy is giving their "offensive wish" as an answer ... so Wells & Haw might say something to the effect of - Power I, Wishbone, Single Wing (anything to get a 2nd or 3rd TB into the game).

Maybe so - and then there is this -

Maybe there is a little campaign of public statements that amount to misdirection. My expectation is this, one thing the players have likely been told to do is say nothing specific and literal about the Buckeye playbook or planning for this game.
