My comment has nothing to do with the WSU game. We shot like [Mark May]. Officiating had little to nothing to do with that outcome.

EDIT: But I will note that there is no reason (outside of cheap foul calls) that we should have been able to score 66 in that game. In the Big Ten, we score under 50. And still lose obviously.

Fact: When it comes to fouls not all referees call the game the same way.

Fact: A good team/coach should be able to recognize the way referees are calling the game and adjust their play accordingly.

Realistically: The best that you can hope for with referees that their calls are technically correct and consistently the same for both teams throughout the game.

Agree on all counts, but that still doesn't mean the refs don't contribute significantly to who is "the better team" on any given night. Various interpretations of rules punish or reward specific styles of play. If you are Louisville you can't just decide to become an inside power team because refs aren't letting you press.

That said, it is what it is. It is a fast game that requires lots of judgement and split second decision making. You can only ask that they not be consciously biased in their calls.

In the case of our most recent loss, Matta needs to make sure the kids know when tip-off is. You can't play 10 minutes and beat a team that plays 40.

Fact: Ohio State and MSU nearly doubled their average fouls given a game in the NCAA tournament (MSU not as much as OSU).

Maybe OSU and MSU suck at adjusting their games. Preferrably, the Big 10 adjusts the way they call games so it mirrors what is happening nationally. If Craft pressuring the ball is a foul, then I want it called in Big 10 play too. If bumping guys on back-screens is a foul in the tourney, I want it called in Big 10 play.

The inconsistency is a killer for physical teams.

It's not shocking to me that in Big 10 play, Michigan averaged the fewest fouls per game. They are easily the least physical team in conference. It further supports my notion that Michigans style of play was best suited for a deep run.

Which is why I was so puzzled by the officiating in the B1G tourney. They were letting them play extremely physical, whereas I thought the officiating should have been called in a way to prepare them for the Dance.

So Michigan loses to Wiscy in the quarterfinals of the B1G tourney, and makes the final four. Wisky goes to the finals of the B1G and loses to a 12 seed.

Yes I agree, how close a referee calls a game can play into onto one team's strengths and/or another team's weaknesses. However, an adjustment by one team can still help minimize (and maybe eliminate) their disadvantage.

Maybe the overall "fair thing" would be for the NCAA (not each conference) to hire, train, evaluate, and schedule the referees. However, before this will happen the majority of the conferences would have to recognize that there is a problem here and be willing to do something about it.

Correct.

It not a coincidence Michigan finished fifth in the Big 10 standings but has made it to the Final 4. Michigan is loving March and the newfound offensive freedom. MSU & OSU are left having head coaches complain about "the flow of the game and quick whistles" and a coach that nearly has a stroke on the sideline going into half-time.

The call on Ravenel going into the half wasn't a case of the refs calling a tight game; it was a case of the refs being absolutely and pathetically terrible at their jobs.

That call was one of several examples (the phantom call on Smith Jr. where he did not touch the shooter at any point during the play being another) that blows this hope

straight to hell.

The refs are terrible. They make terrible calls against Ohio State. They make terrible calls that go in Ohio State's favor. They make terrible calls consistently throughout the entire game.

Watching becomes a case of hoping that the refs screw over the other team (charge at the end of Iowa State) worse than they screw you over. It also becomes a case of hoping that those calls screw someone over at a particular time of the game.

Really, really enjoyable to watch. :roll2:

It's like you just described a nightmare I had regarding the new rule changes in football.

It just seems to me that college basketball is becoming so phyical and at such a fast pace that refs may have a hard time making the correct calls
and we in the stands and in TV land see it just abit different. .
