Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

No doubt the warm weather is all that's holding him back. My concern is that he's still scheduled for 4-5 trips to the DL this year and there are only so many weeks in a season.

I fear his triple crown bid may not get a fair shot.

Well, one team had to win. What an awful ballgame. Complete miracle this team is only 7-9.

To illustrate how well rounded at sucking both teams are;

Pitchers combine to issue 13 walks
Fielders combine for 5 errors
Hitters combine to strand 25 runners

Buster Posey lost this game for the Giants in the first inning. Brandon Phillips should have struck out on that ball in the dirt. Posey appealed that he caught a foul tip after the ball hit the dirt but never touched the bat. If his instinct had been to tag Phillips rather than appeal for a caught foul tip it probably would have meant the end of the inning. Instead, Phillps gets one more chance and takes Cain deep.

Speaking of catchers, I liked seeing Hanigan back there tonight. While I like Mesoraco's potential with the stick and think he can be a good one, he is not anywhere near Hanigan when it comes to the finer points like calling the game, settling the pitcher and framing pitches. I know Latos was eventually going to turn it around one way or another, but I think tonight's performance had a lot to do with pairing him up with a more experienced backstop.

Coming into this game here are the ERA's for the catchers...

Hanigan - 2.88
Mesoraco - 5.12

Hanigan, being Arroyo's personal catcher, is due for a bit of a correction in his number. I think there is a definite difference in the two backstops, but I don't think it is as great as those numbers indicate. Hanigan is on the wrong side of 30 and Mesoraco seems dedicated to his craft - hopefully he's learning some of those finer points so he can grow into the player the Reds are going to need him to be in the coming years.

I am sure they will get closer. I was just surprised seeing how big of a difference there is between the two right now.
