Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Drew Stubbs by month:

April: .241/.283/.310/.593
May: .225/.307/.402/.709
June: .219/.375/.469/.844
July: .239/.283/.467/.750
August: .186/.245/.245/.491

This may come as a shock, but Stubbs was most useful in the month he only appeared in 35% of the teams games.

Isn't the current sabermetric position that who-hits-where in the lineup doesn't have an effect on runs scored?

It would be nice to see, say, Phillips and Hanigan hit 1-2 and Cozart and Stubbs hit 7-8 just for, say, &*%!s and giggles though.

Sort of. Lineup changes can only account for 10-15 runs per year as long as the manager's lineup is not totally idiotic (and I mean batting the pitcher first kind of stupid, not just Dusty stupid). Top of the lineup gets more at bats. You want your best OBP guys and actually two of the top three hitters to bat 1 and 2. Cleanup hitter should be one of the top 3 hitters with the best slugging percentage. I believe next best actually bats 5th, the next guy third, pitcher 8th, and the rest filled in with the rest of the hitters in order. There are other variables in there I am glossing over, yet this would be a stab at it using WOBA.

1. Todd Frazier
2. Ryan Ludwick
3. Brandon Phillips
4. Joey Votto
5. Jay Bruce
6. Ryan Hanigan
7. Zack Cozart
8. Pitcher
9. Drew Stubbs

You can make a case of moving Hanigan up based on OBP, but he has batted 8th all year and that does increase his OBP.

If Rolen is in the lineup, it would look like this...

1. Ryan Ludwick
2. Jay Bruce
3. Scott Rolen
4. Joey Votto
5. Brandon Phillips
6. Ryan Hanigan
7. Zack Cozart
8. Pitcher
9. Drew Stubbs

Once again you could put Hanigan up to 1 or 2 and move some people around. You can also make a case for Ludwick or Frazier in the 4 hole while Votto should be 1 or 2. You can also flip around Phillips and Bruce if you wanted since there is not a ton of different there. There are cases for speed guys, but Stubbs is so bad with the bat there is not enough speed in the world that would move him out of 9th. Although he could move up to 7th, that is how bad Cozart has been recently.

Scott covered it very well but I just wanted to throw my .02 in on this;

For the non SABER minded types it really still comes down to the fact the 1 and 2 hitters get more AB's.

Therefore anyone with a fucking brain shouldn't want his worst hitter to get more AB's than a better hitter just because the worst hitter is fast.

It's up there with giving away outs with a non pitcher (not named Stubbs) on my personal list of dumb shit baseball managers do.

I personally would do this BTW

vs. right handers...

1. Phillips
2. Bruce
3. Ludwick
4. Votto
5. Frazier/Rolen
6. Hanigan
7. Heisey
8. Pitcher
9. Cozart

vs. left handers...

1. Phillips
2. Hanigan
3. Votto
4. Ludwick
5. Frazier/Rolen
6. Bruce
7. Cozart
8. Pitcher
9. Stubbs

I would also consider putting Ludwick in right, Frazier in left, and Rolen at third vs. left handers a fair amount of time.

I've finally figured it out - they aren't going to blow it in the regular season this year - they are in it for the long con. A simple September collapse would be painful, but the harsh reality will be much worse.

The Reds will finish with the best record in baseball, guaranteeing homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

The WB's will win a one game playoff to become the 2nd wildcard. They will then win the wildcard game to set up a series with the Reds.

The Reds will get swept. The WB's will win another World Series.

And so it shall be.

OK, I broke my boycott of Redszone. Didn't take long for the first "can't we all just sit back and enjoy this" post to show up along with "well, the team is winning with Stubbs so therefore he should not be replaced or even moved down in the lineup." Freaking sunshine blowing idiots. Don't tell me to enjoy things! I a honing my hating skills you bastages.

I don't think anyone has prepared for (let alone imagined) the absolute, most disasterous worst case scenario of all.

Drew Stubbs named World Series MVP as Reds beat the Yankees. Stubbs and Baker both get contracts through 2017!

I'd take that for a banner

I think Drew Stubbs is more likely to be named MVP for helping out the winning team than for the reds
