I'm reading that Donnie Joseph was also included in the deal. To me he's another *yawn* type player. I'm not sure Broxton is worth two yawns though.

Yeah. I saw that too, but I disagree with the yawn. Joseph is a lefty that is closing in Louisville right now. 2.86 ERA, 9 K/9, he is giving up a hit an inning, but the BBs aren't alarming.

Seems he'd have been good insurance in case Bray doesn't unfuck himself.

Rob Neyer (born in KC and unabashed fan) thought the trade was a win for the Royals before it was even known that Joseph was also in the deal.

@robneyer

Big win for Royals, who get something for Jonathan Broxton (but Frenchy remains ) http://sbn.to/NSJdbH

@Kevin_Goldstein

Amazing trade for Royals. I might rather have Donnie Joseph than Broxton in the big leagues right now.

I generally don't trust guys who were pegged as relievers from the start. It seems to me that most of the better relief pitchers are failed starters. There are plenty of exceptions, but I'd rather cash a guy like him in for MLB production than be caught holding the bag when he finds his ceiling. I imagine you'd win more trades than you lose with that approach.

I think Joseph was going to be a rule 5 guy, hence why he was included. He has been with the Reds for 4 years out of college and was not on the 40 man.

Honestly, I think that is why they got Broxton. Trying to get any value out of Joseph while they could. As for Sulbaran, not exactly a top arm in the organization. He is about 4th or 5th in line, and the Reds are not exactly looking to replace the entire rotation any time soon.

At first blush (obviously) I think it's a poor use of a commodity better spent on something else. If that was the price for Broxton, what the hell was the price for a marginal LH outfielder that wasn't completely OBP challenged?

Of course all of that changes if Broxton's velocity returns to 2009 form. If that happens, then this pen is more ridiculous than the Nasty Boys in 1990.

Marshall/Ondrusek -> Broxton -> Chapman?

Mercy.

AAA relievers headed for the rule 5 draft are worth about a box of baseballs and some used jockstraps. I don't have a problem with it.

A left handed bat off the bench is still needed, but that can be had in August. Those guys will clear waivers.

I didn't get a good look at Broxton's stats much until now. Ouch, his strikeout rate is awful for him (worst in his career), and his WHIP is not good.

His BABIP is a little high, but still not out the realm of normalcy. Oh well, he takes Bray's spot who was a headcase as awful. Kind of sad, because I have always liked Brays stuff even before the Reds got him. Just never seemed to stay healthy and put it all together.

Damn that Ludwick is making a liar out of me. I was just going to say that we are really missing Votto tonight with the leadoff double, but the veteran is stepping up huge.

1-0 World Series Champs.

Too soon? :paranoid:

I was having a discussion earlier with a Cardinals fan. I know WTF am I thinking? But the Reds have basically made it a 7 inning game if Broxton is effective. Now if we get quality starts from the rotation, the ball game is essentially over.

The offense still needs to tweak the order but guys are actually producing at the moment. If they can continue when Votto gets back and we can somehow get Hamilton up here on the bench by September.............
