Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

Rosenthal says we're in talks to get Garza. Do Not Want unless it means we unload Leake.

OK, I just caught up to the Garza talk on RZ. I don't understand the enthusiasm for it. At this point, though they are two different pitchers and arrive at it in different ways, they both produce at a similar, close to league average level. Garza is older, more expensive, and in the advanced stages of arbitration eligibility. Leake is younger, cheaper, under control longer and has minor league options. To me, Leake is the more valuable player.

Victorino and Pierre both appear to be off the Reds board now. Have read there may be interest in Cubs' David DeJesus in addition to (or instead of) Garza.

DeJesus is a +defender, a lead off hitter with an OBP over .350, can play all three OF spots, and is left handed. He hits for higher average and has a better career OBP than Vic, but without the triples & steals. I think DeJesus may even be a better fit than Vic since his skillset is less likely to erode over time since it's not as dependant on his wheels. He's cheaper and under team control through 2014.

If all the Reds do is add Overbay and DeJesus, I'm fine with that. Not the sexy names people have wanted, but they fill needs cheaply while also being competent.

That would make for a near-perfect trade deadline in my IMO.

Of course take this with the proverbial grain of salt, for whatever it's worth...

A very well placed insider source (that much I can personally confirm) says Reds are working on a blockbuster where we would give up very substantial pieces on the farm. He puts odds of something happening at 50/50.

I realize this says absolutely nothing, and is basically a risk-free hedge on "insider information" but I thought I'd pass it along anyway...

My source says his source is making up sources
