Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

According to a Reds source...the Reds have offered Brandon Phillips a five-year contract in the "neigborhood" of $62.5 -$65 million dollars

Let's pretend for a moment that Jim Bowden is capable of being right about anything other than the decision to draft Joey Votto...

I would like to see Phillips re-signed, but I hope that a number like that would represent their best offer. That's a lot of money for a middle infielder on the wrong side of 30.

I haven't looked at RedsZone yet, but I bet they're already starting a riot over this rumor. The amateur GMs over there will inevitably shit on any move the Reds make.

It was interesting listening in on people at the bar today talking about Votto and his new contract. There's a certain blue-collar brand of loathing that permeates this town, and it can definitely be heard in people's opinions on the contract extension. There was a certain amount of disdain in people's comments because now he's getting paid. I think some so-called Reds fans would be happier somehow with a fifth place team full of Ryan Freels and "Pete" Rosaleses - never mind that even the scrubs these days get paid a lot more than your average Cincinnatian too.

I don't care about that shit though. I am glad though that ever since Jocketty took over and traded for Rolen, the Reds as an organization have started to grow into acting like big boys. I want the Reds to win, not reflect my personality.

CINCINNATI -- Great American Ball Park will host an All-Star Game, Reds' owner Bob Castellini said Thursday.

700WLW's Lance McAllister tweeted that while hanging out with fans at the Holy Grail, Castellini told him the game was "in the offing for Cincinnati."
Cincinnati has hosted the All-Star Game four times since 1933, most recently at Riverfront Stadium in 1988.

One way to pay for all these players:

Attendance
42,956 (101.5% full) - % is based on regular season capacity

I saw a few shots from the streets between the Stadium and the Banks today. The place was rockin'. Now that the area is finally being developed with legitimate drinking/dining/entertainment options (not counting Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill, which I'm sure is thoroughly craptastic) I think the Reds can legitimately enter the discussion for the All-Star game for the first time since GABP was built.

I'm hoping that the development in the area starts to have a positive effect on overall attendance at the park. Now there are actually a few things to do in the area before and after the game.

Yeah I don't care to see them cross dressing or engaging in interspecies erotica either.

Happy Opening Day Victory to my fellow BP'er and Reds fans!!

I will say that I haven't been this fired up about Reds baseball in a long, long time.
So much in fact that I went ahead and did 'my part' and bought four tickets to the game on Sunday. I plan on going to as many Reds games as I can this season. There are no more excuses I can make. The owner is spending to lock down talent, the GM is making deals to build a winner and the park is constantly upgrading its family features. All that is left is to buy tickets, spend my disposable income and watch a game.

Question: did anybody else other than me have a completly unusual/empty feeling in the 9th today? I can't remember the last time I watched a 9th inning without a clinched sphincter and veins popping from my neck and forehead...I didn't even know how to react.

I felt confident enough to close my bar tab at the top of the 9th rather than ordering another round of something strong.

it may take me a little longer to get used to knowing what to do with that kind of confidence again.

Man, if Madsen hadn't gotten hurt this Bullpen had all the makings of a Nasty Boys revival.

In case you didn't watch the Dodgers/Padres tonight:

E Volquez
(L, 0-1) 5.0 3 3 2 4 7 0 97-57 3.60

Volquez (0-1), Cincinnati's opening-day starter a year ago, struck out five through three scoreless innings and singled off Kershaw in the third for the Padres' first hit.

He then allowed two runs on four walks, including three in a row, and two singles in the fourth. Volquez loaded the bases with one out before walking James Loney. Andre Ethier was called out trying to score on a wild pitch, but replays showed he touched the plate just before Volquez tagged him. Volquez again loaded the bases, and then walked A.J. Ellis.

I'm shocked! SHOCKED!
