Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

This has got to be the slowest played 9 inning game that doesn't feature the Yankees/Red Sox I have ever watched. Headed to four hours. Astros have loaded the bases three times and scored three runs. Might have to save this one and just rewatch it in lieu of NyQuil.

K-Rod serves up 4 runs in the 9th to lead the Brewers to another come from ahead loss. Randy Wolf now victim of his 8th blown save.

@johnfayman - Sprained ankle for Latos. "We'll know more tomorrow," Baker said. "Right now, we think he's OK."

@JimDayTV - Latos says he hyper-extended his ankle a bit and it went numb. There's not much swelling at all, if any, he says he should be fine

Albert Chen profiles Billy Hamilton for SI.com:

Rickey. Rock. Vince. Otis. Neon Deion. He saw them all in their primes, all those great burners. So when Ken Griffey, Sr. started hearing the great tales about this kid named Billy Hamilton in the Reds system -- this kid who was so fast he would steal second as the catcher was flipping the ball back to the pitcher, this kid who was so fast he would run from his shortstop position and make outrageous catches at the warning track, this kid who just might be The Fastest Ballplayer Ever -- when he listened to all the great tales, Griffey, of course, would roll his eyes. He's seen enough of these Next Big Things come and go.

Here's the thing about Billy Hamilton: "When you see him in person, he's even more unbelievable than what you hear," says Delino DeShields, one of Hamilton's former minor league managers. "He makes believers out of everyone."

This team baffles me. As frustrating as Duhsty is, as anemic as the offense can be, as brain-dead as the base-running is, as sucky as Leake/Latos/Bailey/Arroyo can be, as irritating as they can be to watch....they are 16 games over .500 and only 1/2 game from having homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.

I just don't get how they are doing it.

I am with you. I understand some of it (they do have the 3rd best ERA in baseball and one of if not the best defensive teams). Yet I would never have thought this team would be 16 games over .500 with the offense.

The low point was sitting 4-8 with a -20 diff in the midst of the StL/Nat/StL stretch on Apr 18, where they had the run of playing four extra inning games in six days and blew three of them. It wasn't until the Apr 19 game when BP picked up his first RBI of the season and Stubbs had his first XBH.

They're 52-32 with a +76 diff since they pulled their heads out of their asses.

Reminds me of George Brett's story about finally being on a team with his brother ...

"I'll never forget the first time he came on in relief for the Royals," George recalled. "The bullpen was out in right field and they opened up the gate, and he came running in like an airplane -- arms spread out like wings, banking left, banking right, banking left and banking right. I'm on the mound with Jim Frey, our manager, and Jamie Quirk, who I'd played with for years and was Ken's dear friend. And I looked at Jamie and he looked at me, and I said, 'Now I know why he's been traded 10 times.'"

Upton off the table.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8195584/arizona-diamondbacks-justin-upton-traded-year-deadline

After several weeks of speculation and rumors surrounding the Arizona Diamondbacks' star right fielder, team president Derrick Hall said Tuesday that there's "close to a 100 percent chance nothing happens'' with Upton between now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

"I would be completely shocked if anything were to happen in-season,'' Hall told ESPN.com. "You have a better chance of moving a star-caliber player like Justin in the offseason, when teams know exactly where they finished and where they're heading, and they can get more creative.

"We'll field all proposals and conversations. You never know. But I would be surprised if anything happens in the offseason, either.''

I've read enough and seen enough highlights, bring Hamilton up to AAA and play him in the outfield. We have one month left before the race is on fire and we won't be making any moves evidently. I would rather he start getting ready to come up now than to make a head first dive up at the last minute.
