Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

That was a great play, no question.. I just have 2 things I am weighing that I haven't decided yet which is crazier..

That Rolen straight up can just still get it done on D...

Or, that the Reds will now have to rely on it to sniff round 1

Go Reds!

The thing that has me more worried than anything (Votto's absence included) is the play or Ryan Ludwick. Stop me if you've heard this one before:

  • The Reds have a black hole at a certain position.
  • The shit player that is at that position starts to play better right as trade talk starts to heat up around the league.
  • The Reds look at the player and think to themselves, "We're fine at that position now! No need to make any moves!"
  • The player turns back into a pumpkin after the trade deadline.
I can see it now. Ludwick will be in LF the rest of the season because of this. Stubbs will still be in CF because of an entire grab bag of misguided reasons that they continue to use to justify his presence (he's young, he's cheap, he's "toolsy", he was a first rounder, etc.) The only moves the Reds are going to make will be after the non-waiver deadline where they bring in a couple 6th-inning bullpen arms and a 36 year-old utility bench guy with arthritis, a .500 OPS and a recognizable name.

Competitive Balance Lottery Takes Place Today

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 18, 2012 at 10:02am CST]

Baseball’s first Competitive Balance Lottery takes place today, when small-market and low-revenue teams will have the chance to win extra selections in next year’s amateur draft. The ten smallest-market teams and ten lowest-revenue teams will have the chance to win extra selections in 2013, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.

There’s overlap between small-market teams and low-revenue teams, so there are 13 clubs involved in the first-round lottery: the Diamondbacks, Orioles, Indians, Royals, Athletics, Pirates, Padres, Rays, Reds, Rockies, Marlins, Brewers and Cardinals. The first six selections will be made between the first and second rounds of next year’s draft. A second group of six picks will be available to the teams from the first group that didn’t get an early pick, plus the Tigers. The second group of selections will be made after the second round of the draft.

MLB teams can trade the draft picks they obtain in the Competitive Balance Lottery. The picks, which can only be traded once, cannot be sold or traded during the offseason. In theory, the draft picks could be involved in some of this summer’s deadline deals.

The lottery takes place today at 12:30pm CDT/1:30pm EDT in New York and the winners will be announced 75 minutes later. A team’s chances of winning depend on its winning percentage from the previous season.

Yeah, the World Series champs are in the lottery for an extra draft pick for "competitive balance".

I think it speaks more to the extraordinary amount of lottery winner level luck that went into making them WS champs than a flawed system.

Maybe not but I am never going to miss a chance to point out how lucky those bastards got last year. It was staggering.

On the bright side, their improbable run to the World Series title made them forget they were 10+ back in August and finished 6 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central, so not only did they not address any of those holes that had them in such a deficit, but they also lost Prince Albert, Queen Bitch, and have a bullpen that's worlds worse than it already was. They dealt Rasmus and a ton of arms and only have Scrabble to show for it since Dotel and Edwin Jackson were rentals.

I would literally kill for that kind of negligence in Cincinnati. Banners fly forever.

The Reds landed the 5th pick in the 1st round during the competitive balance lottery. The pick should be somewhere around 36-37 according to MLB Network. It should be interesting to what kind of value teams place on these picks and whether the Reds are able to use the pick in a trade before the deadline.

The Pirates landed the 2nd pick in the 1st round of the lottery and the Cardinals did not get a pick in either the 1st or 2nd round.

Some minor flooding in the area, and standing water on the field according to some pictures on twitter. Might need some time for the field to drain.

I was driving home from work when the storm came thru. I don't think I've ever driven in a storm quite like it. Lightning struck the bridge back into Ohio right as I was driving on to it. Nearly made me poop my pants.
