Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

The dirty little hippie must be tired and high. Singing kumbaya and smoking weed all night really takes a toll on his ability to pitch day games.

This plus McDonald went all Walter Johnson and sold his soul to be Cy fucking Bill Hall Young against the Reds.

When the dumbshit manager puts Stubbs and Valdez (0 for 6 and 4 K's) in front of Votto instead of a guy with a .387 OBP (who is 2 for 2 in this game) it doesn't matter who is pitching.

I almost forgot another brilliant tactical move. Bring in Costanzo (a guy who hits worse than pitchers) to pinch hit when a bunt by the pitcher would have been perfectly fine. Now the bullpen goes 4 innings today.

Arroyo is sucking and all, but did just pitch his first shutout inning of the day. Let him go a couple more and save the bullpen for when you haven't thrown out a lineup that looks like a big white flag.

I'm torn on which is worse; where Dusty uses Stubbs and Valdez or the fact he has to use guys like Stubbs and Valdez.

It would be so much easier if a)they didn't suck and b)he wasn't semi retarded.

All bullshitting aside, if they don't unfuck LF they are going to hover around .500 all year. 3B with Frazier is actually giving you better than NL average 3B offense. You can also live with an all glove no hit CF. You can't live with that AND a no hit LF platoon.

Josh Willingham is going to be the coveted bat come trade time, I say make a good offer and go get him now before the price gets bid up. Even I would feel pretty good about their chances (especially in this division and no dominant NL teams this year) with a plus bat in LF.

My fear is the GM still thinks he's in St.Louis and any has-been/never-was he puts in uniform will turn into Ted Williams. This is how you get the Taveras, Patterson, Ludwick's of our recent world.

and exactly who are you trading for him (mind you a guy the Reds could have had for nothing his off season)? Hamilton and Stephenson? That is about all the Reds have left in the minors, and even then they are question marks. Perhaps throw Corcino in the mix.

and as mentioned, it's not like the Reds didn't know about LF to start the year. They obviously were not willing to give Willingham around $7 million a year before. I doubt they will take it on now on top of losing the only 2 prospects they have left with any major league potential.

The Reds have no pieces left to trade in order to make any kind of major move. They already got rid of them to get a 4.5 ERA pitcher. This team can only get a journyman for the bench who might be able to hit .225 (which would actually be an improvement).

edit: Oh, and I have to remark on the "trade now before the price gets bid up." The exact opposite happens. First of all, supply and demand. Right now very few sellers and lots of buyers. Pretty much every team in baseball besides the very bottom dwellers are buyers. That drives up price. Second, a simple rule of negotiating is the longer you wait the better the price. Now, that is only a good idea for bargain hunters since you can miss out. Yet if you are searching for a deal, never go running out and try to get a deal done quickly. Right now the Twins are going to ask for the moon knowing they have time to wait. Yet the longer the buyer waits, the more desperate the seller. The best time to get any deal for trades (from a buyers perspective) is right near the trade deadline. That is when sellers get desperate. Right now is the worst time to get good value on a trade, and hence why you rarely see trades this time of year.

James McDonald has been doing that all season. Opponents are batting .198 against him, 5th in the NL. :)

I personally would trade Hamilton while his prospect status is still in full effect. There is no more overrated tool than speed and when you look past that I don't see much else. That's all we need is two Drew Stubb's on this team.

The twinkies need SP and we also have depth there both in the minors and at the MLB level.

I agree the $ for Willingham might be too much but the more of it you eat the less you give back in terms of talent and who's to say we didn't try to sign him and he just didn't want to come here?

If my fantasy trade works the uppity prick will now have to come here.

All joking aside, I know we aren't going to get shit at the deadline but it's fun to talk about.

I don't think you can immediately assume Hamilton is another Stubbs. Hamilton's walk rate is improving and his strikeout rate is improving in high A compared to his numbers in A ball. In comparison, Stubbs in A and high A (while being older than Hamilton) had a much worse strikeout rate. Hamilton is actually right around the MLB average for strikeouts (about 1 K per 5 at bats). Sure, he is not going to hit 15 home runs a year, but has some gap power along with good OBP. Also, his speed is not your normal speed guy. It's off the freaking charts. His really big issue is defense, which is absolutely brutal.

If he's actually developing OBP skills, then forget what I said. I wouldn't trade a 90 speed guy that can find his way on base at the MLB level. I only pay attention to the minor league talk casually, I thought he was still struggling.

I know his SS defense is horrific but if he's a legit offensive threat, not just fast, then 2B or even LF is fine. We've seen the effects of a team completely devoid of a true leadoff hitter.

One guy I was looking at in LF (before he got hurt the fuck again) was Kyle Blanks out in SD. He'd be cheap and quite effective in GABP if he could stay healthy.
