Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

I know it's not kosher, but my impression is that it's something that happens across the league to some degree. That, or maybe I just read too many people on RZ suggesting that it goes on that it has warped my view of precisely how much that kind of thing actually takes place.

It happens to a small degree (you get the "tired arm" DL's), yet not normally to start a season. You normally see it near the end of a year when you can put off the problem until the following year. It's not something you see to start a year.

Yep, and then he manages for innings that never come. While none of us are Cordero fans, he is still better than Masset right now. Send him out there for the 9th and 10th. If it goes to 11, so be it. Let Bray pitch, then let Maloney pitch if it goes 13+. You can't manage like the game is going to go 15 innings. Of course I still don't know the thinking behind pulling Smith. It's not like they needed to use a pinch hitter the inning before, and he was the most rested arm not named Maloney.

Dusty is really sensitive about the reputation that he has ruined pitchers arms. Ever since the extra inning game when he used Harang, and Harang wound up injured, he's been very reluctant to use the designated long man.

As for Masset to the DL, unless he is actually hurt, you run into lots of issues there. The players union doesn't like that crap, and neither do players. It's one thing for a guy like Volquez who just came off Tommy John. Yet for a guy with no health issues at all in recent years, you simply can't do that.

I'm reminded of the scene in Casino when they ask the guy what hand he cheated with.

Big difference. Harang was a starter. Maloney is in the bullpen for that very reason.

A while ago I was thinking about what this team could trade for, and I couldn't really think of something that would be available for the right price. At least now I know what that is, bullpen help. Hopefully that clears up in the next month, but if not, this team has huge amounts of young players that could buy an entire bullpen if needed. It certainly won't come to that for bullpen help, but it's something this team could easily clear up.

Right, that's my point. Dusty does not risk burning the long man for short relief work anymore. Since the Harang extra-inning game, under Dusty, long relievers generally enter the game in the 3rd inning or the 13th.

Now I am confused. In my scenario (different than Dusty) it includes using Maloney in the 13th and beyond. I suppose I don't know what your point was (at least in relation to by post) or how it explains why he kept Masset in instead of going with Cordero for 2 innings. My point was Dusty was trying to milk as much as he could out of Masset because he didn't want to have to go to Maloney at all or have Cordero pitch two innings. Yet in my way of thinking, you go with your closer in the 9th of a tie game (like the Padres) and worry about the later innings when they get there. I have nothing against letting the long man be the last man out of the bullpen. In fact, I agree with it. Of course I wouldn't have used Smith for only one batter either.

BTW...Chapman with minor inflammation. He won't pitch tomorrow, but should be ready for Saturday. Phillips tweaked something in his groin, and said he would be ready to play tomorrow. Yet Dusty may keep him out for a day to be safe.

Oh, and the mandatory video when discussing groin injuries...
