Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

The Cincinnati Reds have reached agreement on a six-year, guaranteed $51 million contract with outfielder Jay Bruce, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The deal includes a club option for a seventh year that could bring the overall value of the contract to $63 million, the source said. Bruce has a partial no-trade clause and the opportunity to earn additional money through award bonuses.

That's a steal IMO.

The front office has taken on qualities of intelligence an competence that are foreign to this city.

-Agreed. It looks like a pretty god deal at this point.

-They still have Tavaras on their record but my theory on that is Mike Browns disease is airborne and Walt's immune system needed time to adapt.

Jay Bruce:
Age: 23
Price Tag: 6yrs./$51mm + club option
Career OPS+: 110
Carl Crawford:
Age: 29
Price tag: 7yrs./$142mm
Career OPS+: 107
Batting average-driven OBP, has speed that Bruce can't match but that's a skill that may not age well either. Excellent defense that Bruce can match (and Bruce plays a more premium defensive position)
Jayson Werth:
Age: 31
Price tag: 7yrs./$126mm
Career OPS+: 121
Getting old, only OPSed over .800 once before coming to Philly. Moving to a new park in D.C that is less favorable to hitters, and into a lineup with virtually no protection.

Well done, Walt. Now take care of Votto.

this makes me happy

reading this article, it sounds like Votto doesn't want to talk about a long term contract now..

Press guys are intimating that Votto's desire to be a Red is tied directly to the clubs' desire to not suck. If Walt is here for the decade and building a winner, Votto stays. If the club goofs it up or blows it up to rebuild, Votto wants options. I think Votto has always been consistent that he likes playing for the original team, and anonymity in Cincinnati suits him.

Per Ken Rosenthal, Arroyo's deal:

$6.5mm 2011, $7mm 2012, $3mm 2013, $15mm deferred.

Well, that's better. With the Bruce signing the payroll will stay similar to last year. Yet really points out what Walt has been saying all along, the team is very close to the very high end of the budget. There will not be any free agents signings of note, and don't even expect this team to add any salary through a trade unless the other team picks up a major portion of the salary. Maybe at the All Star break since the salary will be 1/2 price.

The signing of Cliff Lee to Philly really hurt our chances to advance past them this year IMO.

If Philly draws San Francisco in the first round it might not matter. The Giants beat each of Halladay, Oswalt & Hamels in the playoffs.

I was highly impressed at first, but after reading RedsZone a little bit I've backed off of that a bit. As some posters there pointed out, having four aces is good for the regular season, it makes them a little more fortified against the injury bug, but it does little to help them in the playoffs under the current format. With the way things are now, anything more than three dominant starters in your rotation in the playoffs is superfluous. Lee is indeed an upgrade over one of either Oswalt or Hamels in the playoff rotation, but not by THAT much.

I think RZ is whistling past the graveyard personally.

There are no guarantees once the playoffs start but the Giants winning last year doesn't mean anything for 2011. All you can do is give yourself the best odds of winning and hope for the best. A top 5 offense and the best pitching rotation in baseball certainly gives you better odds than anyone else.

I know I would trade lineups and pitching staffs with them for next year.

Reds sign Renteria. As long as he is not a day to day starter (with Dusty, that is a long shot), I am ok with it.

Some mix of he and Janish is acceptable. Janish is 27 and hasn't shown he's capable of taking over everyday so it isn't exactly a potential crappy vet blocking a promising young player scenario. I'd say some kind of 70/30 ish mix maybe? Who knows but Janish is one of those guys where I say just play the best player, if its ER then so be it.

The contract is a good one from what we know so far. If he maxes it out and gets 3MM he'll produce better than 1 WAR. Also as much as I make fun of it when they cite a guys clubhouse presence (usually in lieu of playing ability) I do like ER's vetness and WS credentials with the kids on the team.

All in all one of those small fine tuning moves that carry a lot of weight. I like it.
