Reds tidbits (2010 season)

The sun rises in the west and sets in the east in Cincinnati?

I KNEW it was different down there!!!!

OK, capture this idea, why have all home plates (Except Great American) been put in the northwest corner of the field? So that the light -- which radiates everywhere except where solid objects obstruct it -- is to the batter's back. Now put home plate in the northwest corner so that the light is in front of the batter.

Imagine, if you can, a college stadium in which the field runs east and west and not north and south. Perhaps a flagpole which goes down instead of up, a runway that runs at 90 degrees to the prevailing wind, a dam facing downstream.

Arroyo will have to bring his own when he pitches against the Blue Jays.

There are plunger rapings and then there was what happened to Arroyo up in Toronto.

That poor bastard probably still starts twitching if you pour maple syrup on a pancake in his presence.

That's great, except the sun is NEVER in the eyes of the batter unless they were playing baseball in January at 8AM.

It doesn't really matter. The Browns Stadium isn't anywhere near "north-south" nor is Autzen Stadium in Oregon. I'm CERTAIN there are others.

My biggest issue with the stadium facing the direction it does... This is Cincinnati, this an OHIO team, the stadium paid for by Hamilton county tax dollars, and the damn stadium gives us a view of northern KY. That's a disgrace in my opinion.

I was young at the time that it all went down, and was not yet a Cincy resident, but I've come to know how bad they fucked up when they didn't put the ballpark at Broadway Commons.

I didn't (even like now at 2nd hand) follow the Reds at the time. That said, I seem to remember there being a lot of pissing and moaning about how cheap the Reds were being, which is exactly what they were at the time.

March 2002 picture of GABP being built with Riverfront still standing.

The orientation of the field is rotated clockwise about 15-degrees, but the sun sets over the 1st base side of home plate most of the year.

The only time I've ever known the sun to be an issue wasn't for a hitter, but rather for a pitcher. Edinson Volquez in a start two years ago had a huge problem with the sunlight coming in through the arches in the roof.

Just to put this to bed, below is a picture of an unknown date but clearly during an afternoon probably in the late spring. I derived that from the foliage on the trees in the background. anyway, it clearly shows that the sun will NEVER be in the batter's eyes during the season and especially after approximately 8AM.

I would think if this were an issue, some of the best hitters in the game that have played half a seasons' worth of games in GABP, like Casey, Griffey, Larkin, and Votto, would've complained about it by now.
