Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Much like an impending colonoscopy the Reds will play baseball again in 2010.

You dread it all year, you know it isn't going to be pleasant but you know it has to be done so you sign up for it wanting nothing more than to limp out of there with some semblance of dignity and a promise that you at least aren't going to die for another year. When its all said and done some wealthy guy is wealthier, you get something shoved up your ass and the opportunity to do it all over again the next year.

Without further ado then, someone pass me a gallon of colon cleanser and lets get ready to kill some time until the Buckeyes open fall camp.....

The Dodgers reportedly are after Harang and the Mets are reportedly interested in Arroyo. :arm motion for jerking off emoticon:

I don't think anything will come of either rumor because, well its the Reds. Also, both have ridiculous contracts that would essentially guarantee we'd get nothing but salary relief in return and we know that isn't going to be spent in any way, shape or form that would help put a winning team on the field. In addition, who in the fuck pitches for the Reds if they are gone? Pile O'Cash and the other minor league suspects we'd get in return can't do it.

The only thing I'd say is make sure any potential salary dump/trade of these two results in Willy fucking Tavaras joining them in their new local. I know at this point that's not really a big deal but I always ask the doctor to not use the real heavy gauge pipe just for my own personal dignity.

Added two years to whatever current contract he may have... And I don't blame you for not going to that shitty site.

Thanks

I called the extension the day they made the trade, surprised it took this long.

The fucking idiocy continues.

synopsis for those who won't click a link to that site?

Basically, Rolen agreed to a 2 year extension that will keep him in Cincy through 2012. It saves the Reds money this year, as he will be making about 6 mil a year now, as he was scheduled to make 11 million this year. Each year is for 6-6.5 mil and a 5 mil signing bonus deferred over the three years. Real standup move by Rolen, and a good deal by Walt.

I'll go to cots and look at the numbers before I say anything else. I thought it was just a flat extra 2 years at the 11M number.

Mark My Word: Rolen signs extension

The Reds and 3B Scott Rolen have restructured his contract and have extended him for two more guaranteed seasons. Rolen's new contract will pay him $23.625 million through the 2012 season with a $5 million signing bonus that is deferred over the next three seasons without interest. He was originally expected to earn $11 million in 2010 but will now get $6 million in 2010, $6.5 million in 2011 and $6.5 million in 2012.
The move seems to provide the Reds more payroll flexibility for next season while giving the 34-year-old Rolen the extra two years of security.
Here are more contract details:
Rolen can earn the following bonuses:
$25,000 per All-Star selection
$50,000 for Gold Glove
$50,000 for Silver Slugger
$200,000 for MVP
$50,000 for Division Series MVP
$100,000 for LCS MVP
$150,000 for World Series MVP
The no-trade clause Rolen had from his old contract extends through the new one.
Rolen also gets access to a suite on the road.
Having Rolen for two extra years brings a few questions.
1. What happens with 3B prospect Juan Francisco? Does this mean Francisco is a left fielder of the future now? Could he be a trade chip?
2. Given Rolen's age and injury history, is this a risky move adding on two more years? He will be 37 when the new contract ends.
Feel free to reflect and respond...
4:25 pm update: The Reds confirmed the signing.
"Scott's signing is an indication of his feelings toward the club and the direction we're taking," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said in a statement. "He wants to stay here, and hopefully he can end his career as a Red."

To answer Mark's questions,
1. Francisco was never going to be a 3B, he has an absolute cannon for a right arm but is the worst fielder I've ever seen at 3B. Yes, worse than Edwin. He has been in LF for winter ball and instructional league, but I still think he's trade bait. Votto will be out there once Alonso gets here, and I'd definitely rather have Alonso than Francisco. The only was I see him staying as a Red long term is if Votto/Alonso is traded or Bruce somehow falls flat on his face for 3 years (he'll break out this year, though IMO, his BABIP won't hover around .200 hopefully). I always thought long ago the Reds should have tried him as a C.

2. I don't think so. 37 isn't necessarily "old" anymore in today's game. He provides so much to this team, as shown by the end of last year. Obviously injuries are a concern, but that is the same with every player. Rolen gets hurt, everyone says "I told you so". Volquez gets hurt, everyone says bad luck. Now I wasn't a fan of the trade at first, mainly because I'm a huge Zach Stewart fan. The other two I don't really care about. If Stewart goes back to the pen, though, then its a win for us. The trade has grown on me, and I think people overreact to it like The Trade a few years ago, where the savior Austin Kearns was traded.

Good stuff.

I was against the trade because at the time the market for prospects was so overheated I felt like we didn't need to take on salary, give up prospects and open ourselves to the risk of an expensive, aging injury prone player. Also, this team is more than Scott Rolen away from winning and he killed us salary wise for 2010.

Obviously when healthy he's an upgrade over EE but he's never proven he can stay healthy at any point in his career. This new contract makes me feel a whole lot better about the Rolen trade.

As far as The Trade goes it wasn't being upset about trading AK or Lopez, at the time it was a flat out give away and people rightly wigged out. Time has shown it to be a gigantic wash but at the time of the trade it was awful.

This contract reworking is the best thing I've seen from the Reds FO in ages. Now watch them extend Tavaras.

Agree on most points. I think a lot of people view The Trade as a loss because Majewski and Bray didn't contribute that season to push us into the playoffs like they were supposed to. But without the try, we would have had no way of making the postseason anyway. Something Krivsky and Jocketty's regimes have done that I LOVE is that they are taking a lot of mid round, high upside/high floor bullpenners who are rocketing up the system. These guys are going to ensure that the bullpen is never our downfall again, and they become good trade bait like Roenicke, Stewart (to a degree), and Robert Manuel.

I truly believe ties will be cut with Taveras after ST. They brought back Nix for a ST invite, obviously meaning they like him. Along with him, I don't see them keeping Taveras over Dickerson, Stubbs, Bruce, and Wlad. Even with Dusty's hardon for him. If Gomes is resigned, I think its pretty much guaranteed that he is gone.

Of course, this IS the organization that chose Darnell McDonald over Jonny Gomes

Although Cincy can make you cry, their games are much fun to go to. Past the drunken stupor yelling at the Braves LF Diaz, which I found quite humorous to his squirming and discomfort, and Vazquez getting rushed on the mound, all in all, Cincy wound up with a win that day, which was surprising, their normall playout is starting out strong, dwindling mid-season, and ending strong, but a little to late for a play-off birth.

Cincy still has many faithfull following them, including myself...
But I've also picked up being a fan of the Mets
Which could also explain the reason I wasnt too upset when the Phillies lost the WS, to the Yankees, even though I ruote on the Sox in the rivalry.

Holy fuck.

The Reds are strongly rumored/reported to be the team to sign Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman. He of the lefty delivery with 100mph fastball.

If it comes to pass I don't know what to say but holy fuck. Are they sure its the Reds?

Man, somebody is playing a cruel joke. Multiple sources saying it is a done deal at 5 years, 30 million. Video in link below:

Chapman makes Reds his destination | MLB.com: News

Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman agreed to a five-year, $30 million deal with a National League team believed to be the Reds, Yahoo Sports reported on Sunday morning.

MLB.com has confirmed from a National League source that the team involved is believed to be the Reds.
