Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Reds are getting 2 million dollars from the O's also.

Reds complete swap for O's Hernandez | reds.com: News
Hernandez was 2003 All-Star with the A's and was once considered very solid defensively, but that reputation took a hit last season. His 10 passed balls were third most in the Majors and his nine errors were the fourth highest in the league. He stopped just 20 percent (24-of-123) of runners trying to steal.
Many observers felt Hernandez's frustration with the Orioles' losing ways affected his play and intensity. Baltimore was also ready to move Hernandez to make room for top prospect Matt Wieters
i saw weiters play a lot last year...he's the real thing. I'd rather have him.

Hot Stove Blog: Reds looking at free agent outfielders

Still looking for a right-handed hitting outfielder, the Reds have spoken to some free agents that could fill a corner spot. General manager Walt Jocketty confirmed that he spoke with the agents representing Juan Rivera and Rocco Baldelli.
The Reds haven't yet spoken to Greg Genske, who represents Pat Burrell. That could be coming soon, however.
"They've called us and I haven't had a chance to get back with them," Jocketty said on Wednesday.
The agent for Moises Alou contacted the Reds but there is no interest in the veteran outfielder. The Reds also aren't interested in Garrett Anderson, who is left-handed.

Reds finalize deal with Rhodes

Reliever inks two-year, $4 million contract with Cincinnati

CINCINNATI -- This wasn't your typical introduction for a free-agent signee.

Fireworks, a light show and a raucous introduction were Arthur Rhodes' first experiences as a member of the Reds on Friday. It just so happened to be Redsfest weekend, and Rhodes was brought to the Duke Energy Center moments after he finalized his two-year, $4 million contract with Cincinnati.

I like it...

Still not sure on what we will see from the pen for sure right now...

Gotta assume that it is...

Coco
Burton
Rhodes
Bray
Lincoln

Then you look at some young guys or maybe Weathers if he comes back...

young guys include...
Josh Roenicke
Carolos Fisher
Danny Herrera
Robert Manuel
Nick Masset

I think they give the long releif to Masset...Which leaves one of the other 4 as the last guy in the pen...I would say Roenicke wins that out of ST...Then you have 3 capable guys on the 40 man available from AAA if someone gets hurt...

We have a reliable closer in Coco, two lefties in Bray and Rhodes...a couple of setup men in Burton and Rhodes...

Not a bad pen...Looks to be much better than in years past...

I know they offered Weathers arbitration so I would assume he ends up coming back.

I know we made a trade with the Cubs where were drafted a guy in the rule 5 draft from the rockies and then turned around and traded him to the cubs for money.

I would have to assume with moving Freel that we will go after some sort of vet OF somewhere along the line. Probally waiting to see where we can get a bargin.

Reds ink Taveras to two-year deal

By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- The Reds on Saturday signed free-agent center fielder Willy Taveras to a two-year contract. Financial terms of the contract weren't immediately known.
Taveras, 27, spent the past two seasons with the Rockies. In 133 games in 2008, he batted .251 and led the Majors with 68 stolen bases and a .907 stolen-base percentage (68-for-75).
Having sought a leadoff hitter and center fielder during the offseason, Cincinnati believes it has filled both needs with Taveras. Although he had only a .308 on-base percentage last season, he batted .320 with a .367 OBP in 2007.
A five-year Major League veteran of the Astros and Colorado, Taveras is a .283 lifetime hitter.

Leave it to the Reds to go and find the one player in baseball that is a worse option in CF than Corey Patterson....and sign him to a two year deal. I can't wait to hear how much they paid for this cod sack. CP just signed for 1 year at 800K ish IIRC. I bet we doubled that....for each year.

Unfuckingreal how bad this signing is. This is our everyday starting CF and leadoff hitter and the MFer makes an out 70% of the time he comes up to the plate. It's hard to know what stats to put up to show what a pile of suck this guy is offensivly because there are just so many to choose from.

Every measurable defensive metric has him as an average defender at best and even though he is indeed fast, for his career the fucker gets caught stealing over 25% of the time.

Hell you could have kept Freel, use Hopper or give a rookie a shot for free, the worst they could do is be as bad as this fuckstick.

Wait untill these cockholes run Jerry Hairston JR out to left, Tavares in CF, A-Gon at SS and expect us to get excited about 2009.

I think whatever Mike Brown has is viral. Walt J comes to town, catches it and just gets dumber than a bag of hammers. Fuck me.

My reaction exactly. .360 OBP and it is a brilliant signing... .300 OBP and it is a dud. I'm hoping for .360 but .300 is more likely.

Indeed. This guy is going to have to better his career year, just to be NL average.

Think about that.

They just signed an out machine to a 2 year deal to be our everyday leadoff hitter and CFer. They think this is a good thing. I will just want to fucking cry once the anger subsides.

Sounds like he should be credited with a stolen base on the occasion that he takes a base on balls.

Small market teams have no room to bitch about competitive balance if they continue to sign players at replacement level or worse to multi-year deals and make them de facto starters. Yes, most of the good teams are good because they have more money. They are also good (and have more money) because they don't flush it down the crapper on guys like Willy Taveras. If Taveras were somehow employed by a halfway intelligent franchise he would only be used as a pinch runner and spot starter... in AAA.

If they had signed this guy yo be the #8 hitter, fine.....but lead-off because he's fast? Christ, fellas. Get into the 21st fucking century, already.
