Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

The way I see it we have:

3/5 of a very good starting rotation

Agreed, I think Arroyo has to come around sooner than later. Would like to see Belisle put it together, but I would have a short leash with him. I think Bailey needs to be the 5th man for this team by July.

1/7 of a pen, no one outside of Cordero is outstanding

Cordero is great, and Burton was great early. I think Coffey needs the DFA soon, like yesterday soon. I can deal with Fogg in the pen and Lincoln and Mercker haven't been train wrecks. Add it up and I'm higher on the bullpen than I have been in several years.

4/4 of a good young offensive infield albeit a little defensive challenged right now.

I agree. I have no problem making Kepp the everyday SS because his slight D downgrade is outweighed by his bat.[/quote]

1/3 of an outfield because Dunn and JR are duplicates of the same player and CF is a black hole. CF is decent defensively the corners are a total loss.

I still think Griffey is an above average fielder when healthy and I still don't get everyone being down on him. Yeah hes old, but hes still producing even if its not as over the top number wise as it was 10 years ago. Dunn is a known commodity, you love him or hate him, but we can't replace his power.

2/2 of a decent catching platoon given the low overall quality at C in MLB today.

I'm not a big Ross fan, and as much as I enjoy Javy in a PH role, I dont think he needs to be on this team. Bako is a nice surprise so far.

0/4 of a bench.

I think this bench will have a brand new look and be very productive coming soon.

What about moving Phillips back to his original position of SS and Keppinger to 2nd where his range doesnt need to be so magnified with Votto at first, whom I think is and can be a very good 1st basemen?

Moving EE to Left or Right field sounds good to me with Bruce at the other. If Stubbs continues to improve and can man that CF position the only thing we'd really be lacking is the Gold Glove/All Star 3b. Dunn/Griff for a tough glove masher at 3b? Possibly throw in some bullpen help and we're in business.

If Stubbs cant get up here soon enough a platoon of Hopper/Hairston isnt that awful with the youngsters we have going now. The OBP is good for those guys and they both appear able to move a guy over when needed, although Hairstons career numbers dont say that he is doing it right now.

We just have too much dead weight on the bench and in the bullpen. I would just like to see a transfusion just to see more opportunities to find that gem we could be holding onto. The deadbeats sitting up here now, we know what they can and cant do already.

My other thing may involve Paul Janish. You guys think he's finally ready to come up? His bat seems to be coming around very nicely now. The last time he came up too soon I think but the Reds didnt have much choice.

Stubbs would be mid season next year at the best IMO...Unless he continues to rake when he moves up to AA, and has a movement in the system like Bruce did last year, but that is asking alot...he is a college kid so he is a little older than Bruce was when they tryed to hold him back a little last year, but weren't able to as he was killing all pitching...His defense and speed are ready for the show tho...Just needs his bat to catch up and work on the K's...He does take lots of walks tho...

By July our entire pitching roster could be different. Harang, Cueto, Volquez for sure in the starting rotation barring injury. By then we could also see Homer who's really coming along and possibly Maloney, Shearn or Lehr. Daryl Thompson is a year away but he's freaking disgusting in AA right now. :yow1:

The bullpen will get revamped and there will be a young influx soon. I'm actually pretty positive where we stand this year. I have no delusions of playoffs or the WS.

Reds show support for Volquez again

Monday, April 28, 2008 2:52 AM

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- Edinson Volquez is one of the few Cincinnati pitchers who hasn't had to worry about run support this season. When he's been on the mound, the Reds score in bunches.
Volquez struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings, Brandon Phillips homered twice and the Reds used a six-run first inning to rough up Barry Zito in a 10-1 win over the San Francisco Giants yesterday.
It was the fourth time in five starts by Volquez that the Reds have backed him with at least eight runs. Each time, the Cincinnati right-hander was won.

Well look like some of the dead weight in the bullpen is out of the way for awhile.

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Reds right-hander Todd Coffey was sent to the minors Monday, the latest move by Cincinnati to get their one-time setup man back on track.

The Reds optioned Coffey to Triple-A Louisville and called up left-hander Bill Bray, who missed most of spring training with a sore pitching shoulder. Bray gave up one run in 8 2/3 innings for Louisville.

+1 for Jocketty in terms of good moves...

I really don't think that Coffey will ever get it back together again...Maybe a change of scenery or something, he has solid stuff, but his fastball is just too straight...Needs to get his other stuff going to keep batters off balance...

Avoiding hanging splitters on 0-2 counts would be a good start.

His fastball is nothing special in regards to movement or velocity. When he first came up he had a slider that was lethal. Where it went is anybody's guess but it took his MLB career with it imo.

Bronson is throwing well so far other than the third inning when he struggled with control some...

He has more velocity tonight, but his breaking ball seems to be all over the place, and he seems to be hanging it and not keeping guys off balance with it...

Like to see the increased velocity and a decent number of k's...
