Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

It is about time for Coffey to see the waiver wire...

I continued to try and hold out hope for him, but enough is enough already...

BTW for those knocking EE he and Griffey are the only ones to do anything tonight in terms of producing runs...

Votto actually scored a run and had a RBI too.

Sorry 40, at this point no one can convince me that E5 is a major league capable ball player on a daily, monthly or yearly basis. He's had one good stretch really and imo, thats not enough to get paid to play the game. He's not alone in this either but he was actually being counted on now for several years. I say send em all out if they cant produce. Its play for pay and if they cant play we shouldnt pay.

Fuck me. Usually the Reds get my hopes up through the spring until the Astros and Cardinals trash them in July as the house of cards comes crashing down.

Now they can't even get my hopes up past April 11.

His career numbers say otherwise IMO...

He is hitting .186...if you think that he is going to stay there that is crazy...He is still getting OB at his career clip...if he gets the BA going and takes some walks he will be just fine...

Yes it sucks since he has been in run scoring positions this year and hasn't produced that well, but he has put up 70+ Rbis in the past two seasons...he is 4th on the team in RBI's right now, second on the team in walks...

Once he starts finding the gaps, and hitting for a better average he will be just fine...

Honestly I am kinda tired about this discussion...The part that is really bugging me is the beating he is taking in the media...I guess they gotta write something when things aren't going great...

I am not giving up on this team this early...We are going to get good pitching with Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, and Volquez and Cordero in the back end of the pen, and the offense will come around...

Right now Dunn and EE are hitting below .200 and that won't go on all season, Dunn only has 1 hr, and we are hitting into 1 db a game...The average is .79 so that should hopefully lower...

Why is Edwin the designated whipping boy? He led the team in hitting last year. He hits at least 15 hr's and 70 rbi's every year. People who actually know a little about baseball, regard Edwin as a solid player. Why are the Reds fans more negative than Pirates fans. These are the same fans who will be calling for Tressel's job if he loses 2 games.

OK, first of all try and keep it together. If you know anything about the Reds fans on this website is the fact that we have a labor of love with this team and most of us have been enduring it now for over a decade in futility. They continue to try and improve which always gives us hope but then cannot seem to play with the same pride and dignity that should be befitting the storied Reds organization which is at least one of my biggest gripes. Talking about Tressel in the same sentence as the Reds is first of all, ludicrous, and secondly off base.

The E5 situation has been a hot topic because he's supposed to be the guy at 3rd base after years of the Brandon Larson's of the world. The hopes were so high for him, maybe too high, that to see him flounder for the most part at both fundamentals and in the clutch, that it makes a great deal of Reds fans want for something more. E5 is not a good ball player he has the potential to be a really good player.

Therin lies the rub. Considering the time in service with the Reds he hasnt blossomed like a great deal of people thought and hoped he would. Why is that? Have our coaches and management failed him? Is he not working hard enough to improve? Is he in over his head? Does he not care? Is there an injury that we dont know about? We all hoped he would just find the magic one day and become a leader of this team but it hasnt happened. What if it never happens? Hey, I dont dislike the guy and I dont think that most Reds fans do either, but at what point do you say "well it hasnt worked out and maybe it never will. Time to cut bait and trade him" or do we just continue to hope, hope, hope that the light will come on?

If you just look at his stats the RBI's, the walks, the occasional HR's it doesnt look awful. Its the situational stuff that drives me crazy. Ill timed K's. Some of the most ridiculous E's in the field. Not producing in the clutch.

A lot of those complaints do also fit some other players as well, such as Dunn for instance. The other players don't get as much ribbing from fans because alot of them dont have the so-called "potential" that E5 is supposed to have so we tend to just roll with the punches with them. Even though Dunn does some of those things too, he still hit 40+ HR's and led the league in walks, outside of Bonds. When E5 has a 40+ HR year I'll leave him alone. Matter of fact when he has a 30+ HR year I'll leave him alone.

I dont want to bag on players but when the only consistent lines they have is that they arent consistent or they perform poorly on a consistent basis, well that sucks. I dont care if the guy hits .250 and has only 80 RBI's and 25 HR's as long as he cuts down the errors and gets some of those hits in timely situations to win games instead of when we are 5 runs up or down. Stats schmats! Watch the games not the box scores. Its the little things that he lacks at present that make me mad at him not the fact that he isnt hitting .300, 30 HR, 100 RBI. Dunn will get better when E5 does due to the protection in the order. No one can wait to see that happen.

Someone mentioned to me the other day that it looks like E5 isnt trying because of his natural demeanor. Maybe thats what rubs me wrong who knows? I digress. This will be my last rant about E5 until he either becomes the player we need him to become or gets traded, I just had to try and clarify where my angst comes from in regards to this topic. Nothing personal to anyone who really likes Edwin, just stating my opinions on the matter. FWIW I have the same feelings about Todd Coffey these days.

On an actual bright side, E5 is only making 450,000 this year which is a blessing.

CUBS 9, REDS 5
Cubs club ailing ace Harang

Reds starter was sick, giving up five runs in six innings; offense again failed to convert opportunities.

COMMENT: What do you think is wrong with the Reds?

The Cincinnati Reds are having an Aaron Harang Growth Chart giveaway Sunday at Great American Ball Park, and a writer at ESPN.com includes it in: "The Worst Promotions of 2008."
Wrote D.J. Gallo, "I'm doubtful that any parents, Reds fans or not, really want their kids to grow up to look like Aaron Harang."
Well, most parents probably don't want their kids to be 6-foot-7 and weight 275 pounds ? unless they can play basketball.
But that $36 million contract Harang carries in his back pocket makes him look handsome, indeed, although the Chicago Cubs made him appear rather ugly Tuesday, April 15, in Wrigley Field.

First off who are we going to miraculously come up with that is better than EE and second he had the clutch homer to win the game earlier in the season and right now his numbers are no different than Dunn's...

He will be just fine...Don't let two weeks of the season fool you...

Edwin cares as much as any other player, he just handles it differently. He and most of the Latin players love the game so much that they play all year. He takes off a few weeks after the season and then starts playing winter ball. Then he takes off a week and starts spring training. Not every player wears their emotions on the same. It doesn't mean he cares less. If anything he puts added pressure on himself. I have been a Reds and Buckeye fan for over 40 years. I am proud of the pride and tradition of the Buckeyes and disappointed in the state of the Reds. I have been a fan of Marty and Joe since high school. Marty has turned so bitter, it is disappointing. A G.M. for another team told me about Jeff Brantly's rant about Edwin. The G.M said Brantly must be the new Howard Cosell. Jerry Narron is a good person but I feel he set Edwin back with his handling of his situation. Dusty is one of the best at relating to the players. Hopefully this will all get back on track and the Reds can turn it around.

Can't say I disagree with any of this...

Now love of the game is based on nationality and race? So none of these game loving latinos get paid for there services in the offseason.

Couple of questions:

Have I ever mentioned I hate being a Reds fan?

Why is it when we have had some of the worst pitchers in MLB history parade through Cincy in the past decade that guys like Dunn and EE become the whipping boys? I just don't get it.

People want to bitch about unproductive players making money? How much will Fogg, Castro, Coffey and Stanton pull down this year? Its got to be near 6M off the top of my head.

Why does WK get a pass for putting this steaming pile of shit for a team together?
