Well Tom Verducci says its a good hire...

so it MUST be true....right?

2. Good hire by Cincinnati bringing in Dusty Baker under a three-year contract to be the Reds manager. The team needed someone with a winning track record and instant credibility when he steps into the clubhouse. Baker will find it difficult to win in that ballpark while short on quality pitching, but his hire is a step in the right direction.

If I were a Cincy fan, I'd be doing this about now: :smash:

Reports: Reds will hire Baker

Sunday, October 14, 2007 4:03 AM

FROM WIRE REPORTS
Dusty Baker, a former manager of the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants, will become the next manager of the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago Tribune and ESPN reported last night.

Baker has agreed to a three-year contract and will be introduced at a news conference Monday, both reports said.
He would succeed interim manager Pete Mackanin, who took over when Jerry Narron was fired in June. The Reds went 41-39 under Mackanin but still finished 72-90, their seventh straight losing season.
Reds spokesman Rob Butcher told The Dispatch that he could not confirm the hiring and said the team would not announce a hiring late on a Saturday night.
Baker, 58, managed the Cubs from 2003 to 2006 and won a National League Central title in his first season, but he was fired after they finished last in the division with 96 losses in 2006.

Reds hire Baker as manager
Ex-Giant, Cub skipper gets three-year deal

Dusty Baker and the Reds agreed to a three-year contract late Saturday night.
The formal announcement is expected to come Monday.
ESPN said Baker would continue his analyst duties with the network through the end of the World Series.
Baker and interim manager Pete Mackanin were the only two known candidates.
Baker is a three-time National League manager of the year (1993, '97, 2000). He is currently working as an analyst for ESPN.
Baker, 58, took the Giants to the World Series in 2002. The Giants finished first twice and second five times in his 10 years there.
His teams won at least 90 games six times in his eight full seasons as Giants manager.

Only time will tell if Baker's right choice
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

Imagine if 37 years ago, the fact that general manager Bob Howsam was zeroing in on George "Sparky" Anderson as the club's new manager had gotten out.
Fans would have gone nuts. They would have filled up Internet message boards and talk radio with harangues against the hire. If there had been an Internet and talk radio, of course.
There wasn't in those days, so Anderson's hire wasn't roundly ripped until it actually happened.

Well written synopsis.. Sports Frog

I cannot imagine what the bitching will be like between Baker and uber-grump Marty Brennamen on the pre-game shows on days after Dunn has a few of his usual Ks. You can't get odds in Vegas on Baker and his desire to "fix" Dunn this spring. Nevermind that Dunn remains one of the top 10 productive hitters in baseball.

Baker to be named Reds manager today

Monday, October 15, 2007 3:51 AM
By Jim Massie

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The news that Dusty Baker will be the next manager of the Cincinnati Reds caught pitching ace Aaron Harang between a leaky pipe and a plumber yesterday at his San Diego home.
"I've had a leaky pipe problem in the house," Harang said in a telephone interview. "I've been dealing with that, so I wasn't paying much attention. But I'd heard (Baker's) name tossed around with quite a few other ones. I'm excited from what I've heard from some guys who have played for him. They really like him."

Cast said in the presser that the payroll will go up substantially and that it will be for pitching. Also that they will pick up Dunns option.

That can all be really good news if done correctly and they are to be taken at their word.

On the other hand, Milton was a significant jump in payroll for pitching too. :(

No better reason to be cautious here. I'm not thrilled that Baker is here either, but he is here. I can't drop the Reds now, I'm 27 and have witnessed only a handful-at-most of good seasons, so my loyalty lies here. I'm not cheering all these bad years, only to switch and have them win. Although if that's what it would take, gimme a call.

Picking up Dunn's option was priority Numero Uno, so I'm glad we didn't fuck that one up. Milton off the books, youngster's coming around, Rockies in the dance...there are reasons to be optimistic. I know they are prone to set us up for a let-down, but this is usually the time of the year that I feel the best about the Reds' chances :(.

Who are some pitching options? Free agents? I don't mean likeliness of them signing with Cinci, as that's just retarded, but is it feast or famine again? Does Dusty attract anyone, or is word out among vets that he's not one to play for?

Personally, I say fix that bullpen, and play ball. We'll see I guess.
