Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

Yep it seems like this ownership has brought in more middle infielders than there is pitchers on the staff...

We need pitching, with the guys we have we can make a good middle infield...

Let me know when we dump Dunn and get a pitcher...

It makes absolutely no sense to sign Loretta now that we have signed Gonzalez. Maybe it is to play first base. He certainly has a better bat than Hatteberg.

I dont think that we will trade Dunn now. If we trade Dunn our offensive will be absolutely decimated. Add to that the fact that Dunn's trade value also isnt that high. Not many people want to or can afford to trade a good pitcher for a left fielder that strikes out over 200 times/year, cant catch a flyball, and is overweight.

Hatteberg had a good season last year at the plate...

I know that we probably won't trade Dunn, but I can keep dreaming...

Hatterberg had a good average but he barely had more RBIs than Rafeal Furcal and Furcal is a leadoff hitter for the anemic Dodgers! Everybody was drooling over Aurilla last year and he knocked in a whopping 70 runs. At least Dunn had a respectable number in that column for someone hitting in the middle of a lineup. Dunn really suffered when he lost the protection of Griffey (even though Griffey was not his old self, he changed the way pitcher approached the line up early in the year). I don't forgive Dunn for falling off the cliff when it counted. What we really need is a solid clutch hitter. Mark Loretta is certainly not it. I do hope that Encarnacion can step it up this year to become that guy. I don't expect the Reds to sign a major offensive threat and unfortunately I don't think their is anyone knocking down doors in the minors.

And what do we really expect from him outside of the GAB?

As for Hatterburg, we need his contact bat in our strikeout ladden lineup (then add Gonzalez and his 125+). He's not a big drop off from the Mayor but is much cheaper.

I heard the Braves are offering up LaRoche. Not sure at what price, but he'd be a nice addition, good power not prone to the K (and cheap). But then we'd have 2 LH 1b which would make as much sense as having 3 catchers.

Just found this on the same ESPN Buzz page

? Why would the Reds offer Mark Loretta two years and $6 million when they already have a talented second baseman in Brandon Phillips? The Reds think Loretta can log enough at-bats as the right-handed first base complement to Scott Hatteberg to make the deal worthwhile. Loretta's first preference is to return to San Diego to play second, but the Padres are more interested in signing Ronnie Belliard or trading for Marcus Giles.

Per John Fay at the Cincy Enquirer

"There's a report out there that the Reds have made an offer to infielder Mark Loretta. Not true, says Reds manager Jerry Narron.
"We have not made a contract offer," Narron said. "We've talked to his agent, but we haven't made an offer."
Loretta is a right-handed hitter. So he fits the bill for the Reds' top need. But he's not the only one on the list.

Narron said the Reds have also talked about Eduardo Perez, Craig Wilson and Shea Hillenbrand.
"It's no secret we're looking for a right-handed professional hitter," he said. "Anyone else who is out there is probably on the list, too."

Loretta would fill the role Rich Aurilia had last year - playing second, third and first base.

"Richie got 450 at-bats in that utility role," Narron said.

Loretta hit .285 with five home runs and 59 RBI for the Boston Red Sox last season. He played 111 games at second base and 11 at first.

Perez, Wilson and Hillenbrand offer more power, but Loretta is more versatile. "

I really didn't think of him much at 3b but forgot he did play there for San Diego. I guess he actually would fit Aurillia's spot very well. I guess I could see it. I think this would mean Freel will either (A) get a permanant position or (B) be on the block. With Castro in the fold for 2 years, we don't need 3 ultra utility players. Could be Freel in CF, Griff in right (been mentioned this offseason by Narron) with Freel as our everyday leadoff.

Why not a right handed bat for the outfield...

Griffey/Dunn/Freel/Denorfia/Hopper

That just doesnt thrill me for the outfield.

First off if the first 3 play you have one of the slowest outfields in the majors and we all know that Griffey is bound to get hurt and Freel has shown while great in his utility role, that when made an every day player that he is prone ot wear down.

As for the other 2 they didnt show anything last year...

I've said that all along about Freel. Even if he is not hurt, his production still falters when playing every day. Yet, I get a feeling he is going to be playing CF or RF as a starter this year unless something drastic changes.

As for the Rooks, give em a chance. Denorfia is an above average defender with good contact (badly needed in our lineup) despite his lack of power. He's been a top prospect for us, let's hope a full season can get him acclimated to the bigs. I could see him putting up Brady Clark (the one who plays above average for the Brewers, not the one who tanked as our top prospect 10 years ago) type numbers in the near future.

I don't have a problem with giving them a chance I just think that we could use a bat for the outfield instead of at 1b...

Per John Fay

When Narron discussed right field, Ryan Freel, Bubba Crosby and Chris Denorfia all were mentioned.
"Nobody talks about Norris Hopper," he said, "but the kid can hit."
Hopper, 28, hit .347 at Louisville to win the International League batting title. He also stole 25 bases. He hit .359 in 39 at-bats after the Reds called him up.

I completly agree. A vet like Luis Gonzalez would be a nice fit. He could still jack some out in the GAB while playing sparingly to keep he, Griff and Freel all healthy and productive. I don't know what to really think of Denorfia or Hopper. If one of them broke through, it'd be a real bonus for us.
