Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

I don't want a blow-up either, but, everyone else has excelled, maybe he can too. If Williams can keep the runs off the board, he should be able to as well. (As you can see, the red legs are making me optimistic so far, understandable IMO!)

I don't want to see anything disrupted here, but with the exception of yesterday's game, Dave Williams' presence in the rotation was already disruptive. Even if Wilson fell on his face replacing him, it's no worse than Williams has already been.

Griffey, however, is a different matter. I wouldn't mind seeing some version of a lineup that put Hatteberg on the bench, moved Dunn to 1st, and kept Freel and Phillips in the lineup. Even if that were to happen somehow (I doubt it), Junior's eventual return is gonna change the batting lineup, and with the way things are going, I'm not sure I want to see that happen. Then again, I suppose that's why he hasn't been reactivated yet.

I shudder to think of the "who can suck worse" contest Williams and Wilson could put on. Both are horrific, both are essentially BP for the opposition every 5 days.

Agreed, its going to be problamatic.

The best scanario is Dunn to 1B, JR to LF, Freel stays in CF however thats based on 2 assumptions that are far fetched at best.

1) JR stays healthy the rest of the year and creates a logjam.

2) Phillips keeps hitting this way and forces Freel to find PT somewhere besides 2B.

I still say we are a trade or 2 away from seeing the finished product. In the hands of a decent GM some combo(or all) of Aurilia/Hatteberg/LaRue could bring a decent return without crippiling the exisiting team.

I also wouldn't be opposed to trading Phillips at his current insanely inflated production, find a super glove to play SS and move FeLo to 2B.

There are a lot of ways things could go right now and its fun to be interested again. Also quite nice to have a guy in the GM seat who you feel safe making these type of decisions again.

Well, I read in the Enquirer the other day where Junior basically said that a position change for him is out of the question. I kinda wish he'd go to LF, but for now, I'd say he's earned the privilege to choose where he plays. I wouldn't be opposed to having Junior in CF and Freel in LF, with Dunn at 1B.

I don't think Aurilia can be traded so long as Freel is in the starting lineup. Aurilia's not all that good, but he has some value in that he can play all the infield positions. The only way I'd be happy with Freel going to the "bench" is if the Reds upgraded at 1B via trade, and Freel ended up spelling somebody at a different position just about every day.

I want to see Phillips be the everyday 2B. While there could be a palatable platoon situation there, I think there is some value defensively in having a consistent double play combo.

What we are all so delicately dancing around here, the elephant in the corner if you will is this.

The Reds have been on a tear. Not just against relatively weak teams (and the Rockies fit that bill tonight, relatively weak) but against teams reckoned to be the strength of the Division and the National League.

And they have been doing this without Griffey Jr. in the line-up.

It isn't broken, in fact it is for the moment anyway well and properly fixed.
"If it ain't broke don't fix it" would teach leaving Griffey on that bench till fully healed and truly needed. Should he come back into the line-up does he in truth add or subtract? Now, at this moment - that is a debatable topic. Later - it may be a no-brainer.

Ok, I hate to say this, b/c Griffey is one of my favorite players on this team, but I honestly think we are a much better team with Lopez, Phillips, and Freel all on the field at the same time, b/c they all provide speed.

I would not be oppossed if we were still in it(which we should be) come All-star break to send Griffey to a contendor(if he is still healthy) in the AL to become a DH and we could get some sort of a starting pitcher(say a number 2 or 3) and then we would be looking real good with Harang, Arroyo, (???), Clauseen, and either Milton/Wilson/Williams.

Well, it's a good thing we both like Griffey, because he ain't goin' anywhere. With his injury history, salary, and 5/10 rights, he's virtually untradeable, even if the Reds wanted to get rid of him.

Really, Griffey is a part of the solution, not the problem. The Reds can field their best lineup if some people are willing to swallow their egos, and if Narron is smart enough to recognize that certain people need to lineup and certain people do not.

I agree, just throwing ideas out there.

As for the game tonite, not sure how this team gets shutout in Colorado. If not for Aurillia's throwing error when Clausen had the guy picked off it might been 0-0 and going to extra innings.

Reds blanked by Rockies

Manage only four hits in first game of trip

BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT-->DENVER - Brandon Claussen told himself to reach.
His right arm, however, didn't cooperate, and the ball went into center field.
"If I field my position there, we're still playing," Claussen said.
The ball he missed turned into a hit for Choo Freeman. The hit started the only rally of the night in the Colorado Rockies' 3-0 victory over the Reds before a crowd of 18,214 on a cold, rainy night at Coors Field.
"Miserable or not, you still have to play well," Reds manager Jerry Narron said.
The Reds didn't do so in the field or at the plate.
They also lost Rich Aurilia. He pulled up in the sixth inning while running out a groundout. He left the game with a strained right groin. He'll be re-evaluated today.
"I'd had these before," he said. "I've been able to bounce back pretty quick."
The Reds managed only four hits off Colorado left-hander Jeff Francis and two relievers. The Rockies had not shut out the Reds in their previous 97 meetings.
Francis came in 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA, but he had allowed only one run in each of his last two starts. He was that guy Wednesday.
"He changed speeds, got guys to swing at balls out of the zone a little bit," Narron said.
Claussen was just as good - except for the fifth, when he gave up four of his total seven hits and all three runs.
Claussen went 62/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five.
But as Claussen mentioned, fielding came into play.
"We could have easily been out of that inning with no runs," Narron said.
After Freeman reached on the ball that got just past Claussen, the Reds had him picked off. But first baseman Aurilia threw wildly to second and Freeman ended up at third.
And the Rockies were on their way to a three-run inning.
All the chances the Reds had against Francis were early.
"We had guys in scoring position," Narron said. "We just didn't get a hit."

Harang prevails once again

Starter has won five straight for 1st time as major-leaguer

BY JOHN FAY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT-->DENVER - Aaron Harang hasn't gotten a lot of attention. To the national media, he's the guy Bronson Arroyo usually follows in the Reds' rotation.
But quietly, Harang is having a very good year.
He beat the Colorado Rockies 7-1 Thursday night to extend his career-best winning streak to five games.
Harang went 81/3 innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out a career-high 12 and walked only two. He improved to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 3.78.
Not bad for a guy who has lived in Arroyo's shadow this year.
"Maybe it's because Bronson's new in here," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "But they give us two pretty good pitchers to match up with anybody."
Harang hasn't surprised Narron.
"We were really pleased with the way Harang threw last year," Narron said. "We knew if he could make any improvement at all, we had one of the better pitchers in baseball. Right now, he is."
Harang has gone nine, 72/3 and 81/3 innings in his last three starts. His ERA in that span is 1.44.
"He keeps getting better and better and better," Adam Dunn said. "Talking to other guys, he's not a comfortable at-bat. He's 6-7 and comes right at you."
Even more amazing Thursday: Harang had two hits. He had two hits all of last year - in 74 at-bats.
"Very pleased with the way he swung the bat," Narron said.
Jason LaRue and Dunn homered to lead the offense as the Reds improved to 20-9. They didn't win their 20th game last year until May 29.
The Reds took a 4-0 lead in the second on Austin Kearns' RBI single and LaRue's three-run homer.
"LaRue's home run was nice to see, especially after last night when we had chances and didn't do anything early ..." Narron said.
Harang had no problem making the lead stand up.
"I felt confident," he said. "... I was getting ahead of hitters, hitting my spots."
